Esmond
Dorothy Mae Smith, age 93, passed away at Peterson Meadows in Rockford with her family at her side. She was born on April 24, 1932 in DeKalb, IL, the daughter of Delmar and Edna (Swanbum) Jones. She married LaVerne M. Smith on February 16, 1952 at the Methodist Church in DeKalb, he preceded her on April 4, 2011. Dorothy farmed with her husband.
Dorothy was very active. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and crafts. She played cards with her card club regularly. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and had a truly adventurous spirit; roller coasters were a favorite of hers.
In addition to her her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sister, Jeanette Jones; son, Brian Smith; and grandson, Nathan Smith.
Survived by her two daughters: Jody (Ed) Weidman of Downers Grove, IL, and Diane (Scott) MacLaren of Rockford; daughter-in-law, Mary Smith of Monroe Center, IL; seven grandchildren: Nicole and Kyle Weiland, Brooke (Nicholas) Heinz, Zachary Weidman, Philip (Jennifer) Smith, Logan Smith, and Joshua (Rebecca) Smith; seven great grandchildren: Tripp, Sylviana, Nilo, Anna, Banks, Johnathan and Josephine; step granddaughter, Kelli (Joshua) Oman; two step great-granddaughters: MacKenna and Aubrie; brother, Don (Joan) Jones of Sycamore, IL, sister, Lois (John) Anderson of Machesney Park, IL and special brother-in-law, Richard Smith of Rochelle.
A very special thank you to her caregivers, Nina, Anna, Enya and Jackie and to Brittany and Chris with OSF Hospice. We appreciate all you did to provide such wonderful care for our mom.
Visitation will be from 9:00 - 10:20 A.M., Saturday, December 20, 2025 at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle. The funeral service will follow at 10:30 A.M., Saturday with Pastor Dave Rogula officiating. Burial is at Greenview Cemetery in Esmond, IL. Memorials may be made in Dorothy’s memory to OSF Hospice.
