Joyce Long

Joyce Ellen Long, a lifelong resident of Durand, Illinois, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on November 8, 1933, in Davis, IL, Joyce was known for her inspiring spirit, her witty sense of humor, and her generous heart. Her life was characterized by love for her family, a tireless work ethic, and a joyous approach to her many hobbies. Joyce's career spanned many years as a bookkeeper and cashier at M & M Grocery/Pacemaker and also worked at Kinney's Pump House until she retired; but she never retired from being an active and enthusiastic member of her community. She was an active member of St. Anne's Sodality and served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years, an achievement she was immensely proud of. Joyce was an avid bingo and bowling enthusiast, a collector of 4 leaf clovers, and a dedicated feeder of birds and squirrels in her backyard. She also cherished many memories of camping in her younger years with family and friends. Joyce is survived by her children Debbie (Charlie) Spry, Denise (William) Starnes Patty (Jeff) Land, Chuck (Sue) Long, and her grandchildren Annette Geiken, Keith Geiken, William Starnes, Krista Starnes, Tricia Land, Michael Land; many great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister Demetra Larson, Sister-in-law Erika Nyman, brother-in-law Howard Nath, and her lifelong pen pal Sheila Upton. Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Long, her parents Jay and Freda Nyman, her daughters Cathy Long and Karen Steward, her sister Lois Nath, her brother Maurice Nyman, and her special friend John Slocum. Funeral Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2025 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 606 W. Main Street, Durand, IL. Burial to be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Durand, IL. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2025 at McCorkle Funeral Home - Durand Chapel, 101 W. Main Street, Durand, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Durand American Legion Gold Star Post #676, PO Box 382, Durand, IL 61024. Joyce's life was a testament to the power of love, humor, and generosity. Her memory will continue to inspire those who knew her.
