Lila Massa Obituary
Lila Elaine Massa, 79, of Linton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born in Terre Haute on October 18, 1945, to Pete and Betty Jane (Miller) Stevenson, Lila lived her life with curiosity, compassion, and a boundless love.
A proud 1964 graduate of Jasonville High School, Lila went on to earn her bachelor's degrees in mathematics and English, followed by a master's degree in mathematics from Indiana State University. She brought her sharp intellect and impeccable work ethic to NSWC Crane, where she worked as a mathematician and served with distinction as a Director Manager. Even after retiring, Lila continued sharing her knowledge and insight, mentoring students as a assistant professor at Ivy Tech College and Indiana Wesleyan University.
Outside of her career, Lila's heart belonged to her church, her gardens, and the people she loved. She was a devoted member of Saron United Church of Christ in Linton, offering both her time and her kindness. As a passionate gardener, she poured decades of dedication into the Greene County Master Gardeners Club, serving in multiple capacities for over 20 years. Her hands brought beauty and nourishment to the world - whether planting flowers in her own yard or leading projects under the direction of Purdue Horticulture. One of her proudest contributions was helping design and maintain the large vegetable garden at the 4-H Fairgrounds, making sure fresh produce reached local food shelters.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, David "D.J." Massa and Daniel Massa; her grandchildren, Jacob and Grace Massa; her sisters, Jane Miller and Sandy Baxter; and her brother, Bill Stevenson. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Mike Burton and Robert Allen Burton.
A funeral service honoring Lila's life will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home of Walton Funeral Service in Linton at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 11, 2025, with Pastor Rhonda Haynes officiating. Burial will follow at Lebanon Cemetery in Midland.
Visitation at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, and Saturday from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saron United Church of Christ or Stone Belt Arc to continue Lila's legacy of service and care. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
