Dewey Carruth Obituary
OBITUARY
Dewey Lee Carruth, of Lost Creek Community northwest of Sulligent, Alabama transitioned into everlasting life on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded with family.
Dewey leaves a legacy of love, forgiveness and service. Choosing cremation instead of burial, remains will be placed in Evans Cemetery near Sulligent with a private family graveside service to be announced in June.
Dewey was born November 18, 1942, in a farmhouse near Sulligent to the late Cecil Carruth and the late Robbie Omary Carruth. Dewey graduated from Sulligent High School in May of 1962. Dewey loved high school football, especially playing for the Sulligent Blue Devils. He was all things football, whether high school, college or pro. He supported favorite teams such as the University of Alabama with passion. He especially cherished time spent with Wayne Otts attending area games until Wayne's death. NASCAR was a favorite sport he enjoyed through the years with niece Phyllis Woods Lucas.
Dewey married Barbara Woolbright in 1963. They began a marriage, continuing to be almost 62 years. Working various jobs after high school graduation, Dewey began employment in the propane gas business beginning with United Propane Gas and ending with Dowdle Propane Gas Company in 2000. Leaving propane gas behind, Dewey was elected to the Lamar County Commission as county commissioner district 2, serving three terms ending in 2012 with retirement. He served the citizens of District 2 with dignity, honesty and compassion. Dewey leaves a legacy of love, forgiveness and service.
