James Mathis Obituary
On the evening of Tuesday, August 5, 2025, our beloved James David Mathis, age 62, departed this life unexpectedly while doing what he loved most-spending time on the water, kayaking side by side with his cherished sister, Martha. Though their passing brings immense sorrow, there is beauty in knowing they left this world together, embraced by the serenity of the lake and the bond that only a brother and sister can share. In our heartache, we find comfort believing they entered Heaven hand in hand, paddling into eternity on waters of peace.
A celebration of James David's life will be held at a later date. The family asks that you continue to lift them in prayer and remember the joy, laughter, and legacy of such a remarkable man.
Born on June 27, 1963, in Bolivar, Tennessee, James David was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Wilbanks and the late George David Mathis. He was a graduate of the Illinois Public School System and followed proudly in his father's footsteps, working as a skilled carpenter for many years. He believed in the value of hard work, always staying busy, and taking pride in the projects he built with his hands.
A man of vibrant spirit, James David lit up any room he entered. His love for music was a central part of who he was-from collecting an impressive library of CDs, to playing in a band during his younger years. He may not have been the best dancer or singer, but he embraced both with a contagious joy. He loved a good game of pool, sharing laughs with friends, and enjoying a cold drink on a warm day. Most of all, he found peace out on the lake, kayaking and spending time with his sister-the moments that brought him his greatest joy.
James David leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, and love. His memory lives on in the stories shared, the music that still plays, and the lives he touched along the way. As we remember him, we find solace in knowing he is now in the eternal presence of his Savior, reunited with his sister, and at rest in the peace of Heaven.
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18
