Barbara Asseff Obituary

Surrounded by her loving family, BARBARA (SHALHOUP) ASSEFF, a lifelong resident of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, after a prolonged illness.
Barbara was born on March 7, 1942, to the late Easa and Nafie Shalhoup. She was a lifelong resident of Charleston and a member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John G. Asseff.
Barbara is survived by her son, John Michael (Crissy) Asseff of St. Albans, WV; her daughter, Nickie Asseff Welsh of Charleston, WV; and grandchildren, Zachary E. Welsh, John Michael Asseff II, Anthony C. Welsh, Jessica Scott, and Colton Vanbibber and great granddaughter Addison Shamblin.
Barbara loved her family fiercely. Her grandchildren were her world. She spent most of her free time preparing for the grandkids' next visit. They looked forward to Sittee's cooking and feeling her fierce, unconditional love. Barbara also LOVED her yorkie, JAZ. Anyone who knew Barbara knew JAZ; their bond was unbreakable. Barbara looked forward to warm summer days sipping coffee on her front porch enjoying all who visited. Barbara loved "playing in the dirt" and seeing what her green thumb could grow each year. She made home a special place and she loved sharing it.
Barbara is also survived by her brother, Dr. Nicholas Shalhoup (Julia). They worked side by side for over 30 years at his dental practice in Dunbar, WV. She was preceded in death by her sister, Vivian Feola and brother-in-law Sal Feola.
Her extended family includes goddaughter and niece Erica Shalhoup Paterno (Tony) and their children Dominic and Vincent; niece Kacie Maushart (Chris); godson and nephew Nicholas Feola (Katie) and their children Nicholas and William; nephew Michael Shalhoup (fiance Kayleigh Tobias).
Barbara's life was marked by her dedication to family, faith, and community. Her spunk and loving spirit will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Funeral service will begin at 12 Noon on Monday, March 24, 2025, at St. George Cathedral, 190 Court Street, Charleston, with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Park in South Charleston.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, at the cathedral.
Donations can be made to the St. George Orthodox Cathedral, P.O. Box 2044, Charleston, WV 25327.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.barlowbonsall.com.

March 22, 2025

Steve and Cathie Perry are so very sorry for your loss. Barbara was always so much fun to talk to and we thoroughly enjoyed our encounters with her at the dentist office. I asked her every time I spoke with her on the phone, "How are you?" and she would answer that her feet were cold. So every time she called our home to remind us of our appointments, she would tell me her feet were cold. She was a joy. During this time may all of you be comforted by the loving arms of our Lord. Cherish every precious memory.
