Freda Romine Obituary
FREDA MAE (MADDOX) ROMINE, 96 of Raleigh NC, passed away quietly at Sunrise of Raleigh Assisted Living.
She is survived by her son Jim (Karen) of Sanford NC, her daughter Becky of Raleigh, her sister Nellie Cummins (Rebecca) of Naples FL, and her brother Tom Maddox (Jaynelle) of Freedom PA, grandson Ben (Christa) and their two children. Freda was preceded in death by her husband Reland (Buck), her Mother Nellie Withrow Maddox Howard of Belle WV, her brother Cliff (Beth) of Richmond VA, her sister Mary (Bill) of Belle WV, and her sister in law Jaynelle of Nitro WV. Freda was "Mommy 2" to several and was loved by them and many nieces and nephews.
Freda was born in Cabin Creek WV and later moved to Belle WV where she graduated from Dupont High School. She attend the Charleston General Hospital School of Nursing, becoming an RN, and worked at Charleston General until the birth of her first child. She married Buck Romine of Buckhannon WV and they "went to housekeeping" in Belle WV before moving to Nitro WV and raising their two amazing, attractive, smart, and witty children. Freda belonged to the First Baptist Church of Nitro WV and later the First Baptist Church of St. Albans WV. She volunteered with the Red Cross and various other clinics as a nurse. Freda and Buck moved to Raleigh NC in 1981 when Buck was transferred to RTP with the Union Carbide Corp. They always traveled the world, with travel being their favorite thing. They also loved going to the beach and playing golf. Freda lost Buck in 1994, but continued to live in their home until 2025 when she moved to Sunrise of Raleigh. She had wonderful caregivers and tried to keep them full of candy. in the last few weeks of her life the wonderful angels from Hospice joined her care team.
Freda was a pistol and could scare her children and their cousins and friends with just a look to make them stop misbehaving. But, she was also quick to fix a skinned knee and blow on it after putting the mercurochrome on it. She was very involved in being a Homeroom Mother at Baker Elementary in Nitro WV when her children were small. She was active in the church and other activities in Nitro. Although she lived in Raleigh NC for many years, West Virginia was always home.
There will be a private family gathering at a later date to celebrate her life.
She will be greatly missed by her family, adopted family, and friends. People loved her and she had a full life well spent.
