Gilbert O'Kelly Obituary
GILBERT O'KELLY, 97, of South Charleston, WV., went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Valley Center.
He was born December 5, 1928 in Asheville, NC. A son of the late, David Lee O'Kelly and Carrie (Wood) O'Kelly. Also preceding him in death was his wife, Anna Rose (McNeely) O'Kelly.
He was an active member of Oakwood Baptist Church and enjoyed listening to services online when he could not attend. His father passed away when he was 14 years old, but with the help of his mother finished high school. After brief employment with the Southern Railroad, he was employed by CSX Railroad for over 40 years. His family, extended family and his wife were the loves of his life. He enjoyed serving at his church, as well. He loved to bowl and was a long time Cincinnati Reds and WVU Mountaineer fan. He enjoyed watching games with his family when possible. He was a loyal son, a faithful husband, father and provider for those he loved. His faithful presence will be greatly missed.
Special appreciation is credited to his care team of Victoria Dobbins, Mellisa Sue Rainey and Lori Henley for giving him not only quantity of life, but a quality of life to accompany it.
He is survived by one son, David O'Kelly; sister, Maxine (O'Kelly) Compton; grandchildren, Kristopher O'Kelly, Benjamin O'Kelly, Emily (O'Kelly) Sutphin, Elizabeth (O'Kelly) Balladares and numerous great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, October 10, 2025 at Oakwood Baptist Church 855 Oakwood Road, Charleston, WV 25314 with Pastor David Moutz officiating. Gilbert will be laid to rest in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill following the service.
Family and friends will gather for visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Oakwood Baptist Church in his honor.
