LINNIE JOAN VICKERS GUTHRIE passed away peacefully, at Hubbard House Hospice in Charleston, West Virginia, on Tuesday, September 2.
Joan was born on August 27, 1926 in Elkview, West Virginia, to William Henry Vickers and Linnie Erie Faber Vickers. She was raised on Oakdale dairy farm in Frame, West Virginia where she enjoyed a wonderful childhood.
After graduating from West Virginia University in 1947 she married James Spicer Guthrie, Jr and celebrated 74 years of marriage before he passed in 2022. They settled in Mink Shoals and raised four children. In addition to being a homemaker, Joan worked for Appalachian Power Company and Stone and Thomas Department Store. In 1970 Joan became a Genealogist for the State of West Virginia Archives and History Library. She worked for over 20 years assisting people from all over the USA, in search of their family histories.
In addition to work and family, Joan was a member of the Tiskelwah Eastern Star Chapter #45, the Ladies Circle at Trinity United Methodist Church and the Kanawha Garden Club.
Joan, Mom, Mamma Jo, Aunt Jo, was a devoted mother, daughter, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She loved history, traveling, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and gardening. Joan was a great cook and Hostess and had many gatherings of family and friends at the house.
Mom's greatest loves were our Dad, her family, and the Great State of West Virginia. Mom is survived by her four children: James Spicer Guthrie (Becci), Chester, Virginia. Linda Jo Guthrie Fauber (Chuck), Pinch WV. Carol Ann Guthrie Shaw (Bernie), Lexington, Virginia. John Vickers Guthrie (Amy), Buchanan, Virginia.
Four grandchildren: James Porter Guthrie (Misaki), Tokyo, Japan. Jessica Marie Guthrie, Midlothian, Virginia. Heather Lynette Fauber Justice (Joe), Dunbar, West Virginia. Adam Christopher Fauber (Kensie), Frame, West Virginia. Ten wonderful great grandchildren, who she adored and a many, many Nieces and Nephews who she loved.
A graveside service will take place on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 1 p.m., with visitaion at 12:30 p.m., at Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney, West Virginia. Hafer Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hubbard House Hospice, Charleston, West Virginia.
Special thanks would like to be given to the folks at Hubbard House, who treated mom with such wonderful loving care. And last but not least we would like give the utmost thanks to Mom's caregiver, Arlene Furby. Because of Arlene, Mom was able to live out her last years at home. We could never thank you enough.
