Mattalea Sheridan Obituary
MATTALEA CALES SHERIDAN, passed away on August 26, 2025 at Hubbard Hospice in Charleston WV. She was born in Crawley, WV and grew up in Rainelle. She graduated from Rainelle High School in 1947 and promptly enrolled in Capitol City Commercial College. Soon after, she met and married Joseph C. Sheridan. Matt and Joe raised their children in St. Albans. Matt was active in civic life and became a longtime member and President of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in St. Albans. She was awarded lifetime membership of WV Garden Clubs by Kanawha Garden Clubs and was twice elected Director of Adena District. Matt was a member of First Baptist Church of St. Albans and the Thursday Literacy Club. She worked as a Prudential Insurance agent from 1981 until her retirement in 1992.
After 60 years in St. Albans, she moved to Summersville WV where she spent her final years just being Granny Matt. She was a member of the Summersville Library book club and Summersville Presbyterian church, often referring to herself as a Bapsbyterian.
Matt is preceded in death by her husband Joe C. Sheridan, infant daughter Kelly Ann, parents Oather G. and Myrtle Cales, all her siblings; Helen Selvey (NC), Velma O'Dell (WV), Gertrude Cales (CT) and William J. Cales, (OR). She is survived by children Michael C. Sheridan (Kellen) of Lewisburg, Terry Wiley (Michael) of St. Albans and Kathy Sibbett (Larry) of Summersville. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Ben Sheridan (Satoko) of Lillington, NC, Joshua Sheridan (Liz) of Scotia, NY, Lenny Wilson (Mandee) of Hurricane, WV, Ashley Wilson of St. Albans, Marylea Wiley Witosky (Charles) of Brooklyn, NY, Patrick Sibbett (Lakyn) of Boston, MA, and Carson Sibbett Roach (JP) of Nettie, WV. Also surviving are her treasured great grandchildren, Melissa, Penelope, Oscar and Darcy. Special nieces, Sandy Smith and Mary Beth O'Dell (WV) and Nancy and Carol Selvey (NC) also survive her.
At Matt's request, a family graveside service will be held at Wallace Memorial Cemetery in Sam Black Church, WV where most of her family rest.
Matt's children would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston and to all the kind physicians and their staff members who have cared for her for many years, especially, Dr. Albeir Mousa, Dr. Mark Hatfield, Dr. Stephen Cassis, Dr. S. Shawn Groves, Dr. Joshua Lohri, Dr. Jonathan Dale, and Drs. J. Stephen and Chrishelle Shank.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2025 at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville with Pastor Joel Harpold officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of the White-Anderson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Summersville.
In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to, the Good Days foundation chronic disease fund for macular degeneration, The Nature Conservancy, or the Arbor Day foundation.
