Mildred Gunning Obituary


MILDRED "JEAN" GUNNING of Jodie, WV passed away on April 6, 2025, at home.
Jean was born to Russell and Bessie Bennett at Jodie on July 19, 1925. Jean graduated from Gauley Bridge High School in 1944. She worked for Gauley Mountain Coal Co. in the company store for several years. She met and married John Gunning in 1946. They had two children, Linda Gunning Morris and Michael John Gunning.
She leaves behind two grandsons, Brian Morris and John "JW" Gunning (Gabby), two great grandsons, Noah Morris and John Bennett "JB" Gunning, and one great granddaughter, Paisley J. Gunning.
In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her daughter Linda, husband John, son Michael, sister Gertrude Thomas, and brother Carl Bennett.
Jean attended the Jodie Church of God where she taught Sunday school for several years.
Jean loved to fish, travel on bus trips with her friends, and read as long as her vision permitted.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2025, at Pennington Smith Funeral Home Gauley Bridge, WV with visitation for friends and family from 12 - 1 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Montgomery Memorial Park, London, WV.
