PEGGY ANN (GODBEY) HUMPHREYS, 87, of South Charleston, WV passed away in her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 4, 2025. Peggy was a life time member of Elmore Memorial Advent Christian Church and also attended Glad Tidings Apostolic Church with her sister Brenda Crouch.
Peggy was born to the late Award Addison and Altha Louise Pringe Godbey. She was raised in Charleston, WV. Following her 1967 graduation from LPN school, she worked many years at Thomas Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1996. She was also an LPN for many years at Riverside and Herald nursing homes. She then worked at South Central Regional Jail as a forensic LPN, until her retirement in 2006.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband and best friend Russell Coleman. Her four sisters Wanda Miller (Wayne), Phyllis Vancamp, Betty Matheny (Charlie), Alice Nichols. Her two brothers Bob Godbey and Junior Godbey (Phyllis). A great-granddaughter Guinevere Clara Humphreys. She was also preceded in death by Janna Songer, who she considered a granddaughter.
Left to cherish her memory are her sister Brenda Crouch and sister-in-law Shirlene Godbey. Her children Lee Humphreys (Lorette), Penny Hall (Jim), and Tammy Cunningham (David). Her grandchildren Clifford Hall, Heather Hall-Bailey, Amanda Spencer, Maggie Humphreys (Quinn), Thomas Humphreys (Haley), Bradley Cunningham (Brooke), Danielle Cunningham (Jennifer). And 14 great grandchildren. And those she considered her extra grandchildren on the Cunningham side. She also has many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Peggy will be remembered by her family as a loving, caring, and compassionate mother and grandmother. Peggy enjoyed planning Family trips, family meals, or big holiday parties. She was always up for a game of canasta with her grandchildren. She mirrored that same love into her work as nurse for her patients, co-workers, and friends. She inspired many of her family members, who are also nurses or in the health care field.
The family of Peggy would like to thank Hospice Care of Charleston for all the compassionate care and support given to our Mom and Mawmaw during her last days. Especially Beth, Whitney, Jenn, and Kaycie.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 13, 2025 at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston with Pastor Wilson Hudson and Minister Eddie Coleman officiating. Peggy will be laid to rest in Floral Hills Garden of Memories following the service.
Family and friends will gather for a time of visitation Sunday from 6 - 8 p.m. The WV Nurse Honor Guard will be performing a Nightingale tribute during the visitation to honor the many years Peggy served as a nurse.
