Peggy Rhodes Obituary

PEGGY SONGER RHODES, long-time resident of Rocky Fork, passed away on August 20 in Lewisburg, WV. She taught school for 30 years in Kanawha County with most of her career teaching special education at Boreman and Point Harmony Elementary Schools in the Cross Lanes area.
Peggy's college education began when her youngest son Tim began elementary school. She worked full time as a teaching assistant while earning her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education and art education from WV State University. She later earned a Masters in learning disabilities from the WV College of Graduate Studies and completed 45 additional hours in graduate studies in Behavior Disorders and Learning Disabilities.
Peggy was born on September 28, 1936, in Loudendale, WV. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Elsie Songer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years Donald Rhodes; her brothers Charles and Bill Songer; sisters Mary Anne Kidd and Judy Perrine.
She is survived by her sister Linda Rowland of Rock Hill, South Carolina; her sons Dr. Larry Rhodes and wife Terry of Rainelle, WV; Rick of Mooresville, North Carolina; Tim of Morgantown, WV; grandchildren Amanda Rhodes of Independence; Joshua and wife Taryn of Dawson; Ethan and Evan Rhodes of Oak Island, North Carolina; and great grandchildren Gracie, Amelia and Zeke Rhodes of Dawson.
Peggy's joy of working with children also included teaching Bible School and as a den mother to her sons' Cub Scout troop. She was a member of Loudendale Freewill Baptist Church and a previous member of Harper Memorial Church.
Peggy's passions included traveling with her sisters and spending time at her "camp" on the Greenbrier River. She was a huge fan of WVU football and basketball and proud to be a graduate of Charleston High Schol. She maintained contacts and participated in gatherings with a small group of her "Mountain Lion" classmates throughout her life. Additionally, she loved flowers and enjoyed gardening.
A visitation with family and friends will be held from Noon to 1 p.m. at the Tyler Mountain Funeral Home on Monday, August 25. Services will begin at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Romy Comer and Reverend Jonathan Comer. Peggy will be laid to rest next to her husband at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens.
