Robert Atkins Obituary

DR. ROBERT "BOB" BURTON ATKINS, 72, of Madison, W.Va., passed away on November 15, 2023. Bob was born on August 9, 1951, to the late Geraldine and Mosie "Buster" Atkins.
Bob grew up in Rock Creek with his brothers, Joe and Ed. He graduated from Scott High School in 1969, and then attended West Virginia University where he received a Bachelor's of Science in Biology in 1973 and graduated from the WVU School of Medicine in 1977.
Bob moved to Charleston in 1977 to complete his medical residency where he met his future wife, Jane. In 1980, he moved back to Madison to open Madison Medical. He previously served as the Chief of Staff at Boone Memorial Hospital; and was also a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine at the WVU School of Medicine where he mentored many medical students over his career. Dr. Bob cherished his patients and loyal employees over his 40 years of practice.
Bob was an avid Mountaineer fan and a founding member and past President of the Boone County WVU Alumni and Friends chapter. He loved reminiscing about his childhood in Boone County, and his favorite story to tell was of his unassisted triple play in little league. He enjoyed golfing with friends, cooking, spending time in Canada and Hilton Head Island, laughing with his wife, and dancing with his family.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and parents-in-law Dr. Robert and Donna Patchell.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane; their children Shannon Milroy, Jessica (Steve) Fielding, Kyle (Samantha) Atkins, and Megan (Jonathan) Warner; and his beloved grandchildren Raelyn and Landry Milroy, Emma Fielding, and Rhi, Nevaeh, Alexis and Buster Atkins. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe (Phyllis) and Ed (LouAnn), brother-in-law James (Pam) Patchell, nieces Marci Atkins and Jillian Ezelle, and nephew Robert Patchell.
Honoring Bob's wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boone County WVU Alumni and Friends Chapter at P.O. Box 38, Madison, WV 25130 or Boone Animal Rescue Coalition (B.A.R.C.) at P.O. Box 536, Madison, WV 25130.

So so sorry, Not only had Bob been one of my many Drs. he was a life long friend, and when I say life long I grew up with him, played little league with him and he always complained to me that I cost him a lot of money when I got him into playing golf. My response to him was he got me back with my Dr bills. Just had recently seen him at Kroger“s in Charleston he looked great hugged me and we had a conversation, man wished it would have lasted a lot longer. Going to miss you my friend. My condolences to the family.
