Charlie William Byrd

Charlie William Byrd, age 86, of Squire, WV, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Charlie was born on September 1, 1939, in Richlands, VA, and was the son of the late William D. Byrd and Pearl Horn Byrd. He was a coal miner for 32 years and was a member of the local UMWA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa Lynn Byrd Hurt; grandson, Ricky Harrison, Jr.; brothers, Arlin Byrd and Buford Byrd; and sisters, Agnes Johnson, Ocie Perman, and Emma Hines. He is survived by: His Wife, Avis A. Lane Byrd Daughters: Carlene Keene and husband, Jimmy, Jr. of Richlands, VA Michelle Tickle and husband Stephen of Tazewell, VA Charity Chubb and husband, Richard of Nixa, MO Sisters: Trula Hardy of Douglasville, GA Mary Johnson of Douglasville, GA Brothers: Raleigh Byrd and wife, Marie of Bandy, VA Hubert Byrd and wife, Ruby of Buchanan County, VA Grandchildren: Bridget "Nikki" Kiser and husband, Jason Jimmy Keene, III and wife, Crystal Hannah Hurt Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren and several family and friends. Special thanks to Compassus Hospice and Tazewell Community Hospital for all their care. Funeral services for Charlie William Byrd will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA with Pastor David Epperson officiating. Interment will follow at Ferrell Family Cemetery, on Horn Mountain, near Whitewood, VA. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Keene, III, Kent Bissell, Heidi Bissell, Alex Bissell, Teresa Forrester, and David Austin. The Byrd family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. Members of the UMWA Chaplain Corps will conduct a memorial service.
