Jack Dunbar Obituary
Jack Lee Dunbar, born on October 5, 1927, in Waiteville, West Virginia, went to his heavenly home on Thursday, September 18, 2025. He was a devoted servant of God, and a loving husband of 77 years to his wife, Doris. He called her his Angel. He was always happy, always positive, always quick to praise the Lord and talk about how much he loved his family. One of his favorite and most often repeated comments was, "I am richly blessed and highly favored!" But truth be told, it is his family that's been blessed all these years to have his godly example to follow. He wasn't capable of complaining. Work was his hobby. He worked even when no one else was working-with projects like clearing the land on the farm at John's Creek, picking up every single rock he encountered. Beautiful fields created because of his determination to make the land more beautiful and functional than how he found it. He loved to travel and loved to eat, especially seafood and dessert!
Jack began his adult life by being drafted into the United States Air Force, serving 2 years. After his honorable discharge, he worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant for a short time, the finished his career as a supervisor at the Celanese plant in Gile County for 34 years. He was honored to be a member of Gideons International and he was a long-time supporter of the Giles County Bible Bus. He enjoyed handing out Bibles to elementary school students.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie and Lydia Dunbar, his brother Robert, a son-in-law, Harold Hughes, and his only son, Larry Dunbar.
He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Hall Dunbar, his sister, Blanche Combs of Christiansburg, VA, his twin daughters, Rebecca Hughes of Salem, VA and Roberta Steele (Bill) of Knoxville, TN, his daughter-in-law, Donetta Dunbar, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, and many friends and neighbors.
