Rev. Joseph E. "Joe" Spencer

BALLARD, WV – Rev. Joseph E. "Joe" Spencer, age 80, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Radford, VA. Born November 16, 1944, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of the late Pastor Howard and Lorraine Ingram Spencer. Joe loved the Lord, as evidenced by his works as the Founder and Pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Forest Hill, WV, since 1999. He worked at Celanese for seven years and Appalachian Power for 30 years. He was active in the community, having volunteered at Giles Community Hospital for eleven years, and serving as President of the Ballard Christian School Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and golfing. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Spencer; one sister, Mary Ellen Spencer; and brother-in-law, O.L. Faris. Those left to cherish Joe's memory include his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 60 years, Becky Lowry Spencer; sons, Joesph Spencer Jr. and wife Stephanie, and Kennie Spencer and wife Tessa; siblings, Howard Spencer Jr. and wife Nila, Joyce Faris, Dan Spencer and wife Kathy, Tom Spencer and wife Rhonda, Bill Spencer and wife JoAnn, Tim Spencer and wife Melody, Sam Spencer and wife Belinda, Dave Spencer and wife Teresa, and Becky Prunesti and husband Lou; sister-in-law, Patty Spencer; grandchildren, Caleb Spencer and wife Kelsie, Ethan Spencer and wife Kristen, Andrew Caldwell and wife Tahlia, Emma Blaker and husband Chad, and Kennah Spencer; one great grandchild, Slaton Spencer; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in memory of Joe Spencer to the Ballard Christian School (1441 Adair Ridge Road, Ballard, WV 24918). Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Monday, October 27, 2025, at the Friendship Baptist Church in Forest Hill, WV, with Pastor Dave Spencer officiating and Victor Garcia assisting. Burial will follow at the Spencer Family Cemetery beside the Ballard Christian School in Ballard, WV, with Pastors Dan and Tim Spencer officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00PM until time of services on Monday at the church. Patrick Mullins, Morgan Mullins, Jim Spencer, Howie Spencer, John Spencer Jr., Tommy Spencer, Jesse Spencer, and Phillip Spencer will serve as pallbearers.
