Sherry Vance Burton, 59, of
Raysal, WV, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026.
Sherry dedicated many years of her life to serving her community through her work at the McDowell County Assessor's Office, where she had been employed since 1999. In 2025, she made history by becoming the first female Assessor of McDowell County-a role she carried with pride, strength, and a deep love for the people she served.
Sherry was of the Christian faith, and her life reflected kindness, compassion, and a love for others that she shared so freely.
She held many titles throughout her life, but the ones she treasured most were Mom, Sissy, and Mamaw. Her family was everything to her, and her grandchildren were the light that made her world shine. She loved them without condition. Sherry wasn't just Mamaw to her own grandchildren-she was Mamaw to every child on the ball teams they played on, loving and cheering them on as if they were her own.
Sherry was the kind of woman you don't come across often. She was strong but gentle, selfless in ways that can't be measured, and always put others before herself. She had a way of making people feel seen, comforted, and loved, whether through her words, her presence, or simply the way she cared. To know Sherry was to love her, and to be loved by her was something truly special.
Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, the late Roger and Freda Christian Vance of
Iaeger, WV, and her stepson, Adam Burton of
Raysal, WV.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Marc, and grandson, Levi Burton, of the home; her son, Shay and wife Tiffany Bryant of
Raysal, WV; her daughter in heart, Jordan and husband Chris Lawson of
Beckley, WV; and the greatest joys of her life, her grandchildren, Easton and Sawyer Bryant, Krislyn Lawson, and Bailey and Harper Burton. She is also survived by her loving sister and best friend, Drema and husband Derick Rash, of Iaeger Wv, and her brother, Richard Vance of
Iaeger, WV, along with a host of family and friends who will carry her love with them always.
The loss of Sherry leaves a space that can never truly be filled. She was deeply loved, and she will be deeply missed every single day.
The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, support, and love throughout her courageous battle with cancer.
