Wanda Mae Martin

Wanda Mae Martin, 82 of Smoot, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the Peyton Hospice House on Thursday, August 28, 2025. She was born on October 5, 1942, at Clifftop, West Virginia to the late Ernest and Mary Stokes Hizer. Wanda was a cook at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center for many years. She loved watching hummingbirds and tending her flowers. Wanda was a nurturing mother who took care of everyone's children. She thoroughly enjoyed her children, their children, and their children's children. Wanda volunteered at the Quinwood Food Pantry to give back to her community for several years. She was a fierce BINGO player – there were to be no funerals or birthday parties on bingo day. Wanda was a tough, opinionated lady but never tore anyone else down. In addition to her parents and husband Larry, she was preceded in death by her sisters Audrey Trout, Sheila Trout, Peggy Gibson, Elizabeth Barnett; brothers Ernest Hizer, Jr., Clement "Bo" Gibson, Otis Gibson; and her best friend and favorite aunt, Margie Smith. Wanda said, after her last sister passed, "I have watched everyone of them come into this world and I have watched every one of them leave." Those left to remember her love and memories are daughters Wendy Holliday (Shane) of Smoot, Penny McClung (Bobby) of Quinwood; sons Royce Burdette of Montgomery and Charles Burdette of Snow Hill; grandchildren Carlene McClung, Cole McClung, Taylor Holliday, Kyle Holliday, Eric Martin, William Burdette; great-grandchildren Gabriel Ayers and Hadley Brown; and a host of nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held at the Martin Cemetery, Crag, West Virginia on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 5:00pm.
