James Wofford Obituary

James F. "Frankie" Wofford Jr, 64, a lifelong resident of York, SC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 9th, 2025 after a long illness. Frankie was born on November 16th 1960 in Shelby, NC to the late James Francis Wofford, Sr. and Louise Taylor Wofford. Frankie is survived by his partner of 23 years Signa Curry, step -daughter Emmalee (Christopher) Davis, grandchildren; Hannah (Devin) Monk, Delaney Sundberg, Amber and CJ Davis; great grandchildren; Lakelynn, Grayson, and Oakleigh Dunaway, and Thomas Monk, also his sister Sharon McLafferty, niece and nephews; Christy (Mark) Wendel, Scott (Sarah) McLafferty, Jacob McLafferty, great nieces and nephews; Joshua (Allison) Wendel, Charlie Wendel, Lydia, Oliver, and Maddox McLafferty, all whom he adored. Frankie attended York schools, graduated from York High School and Winthrop University. He worked for York County 9-1-1, EMS in both York and Chester counties for many years, and York School Dist 1 for many years before his retirement. He leaves a 50-year intangible legacy of service to York school district athletic departments which he affectionately referred to as his "happy place". He devoted countless hours over the years as well, to a personal project for the athletic department tracing player and team records back decades to be compiled in a book. Though unable to personally finish the project, his work is being honored and being completed by others. He was most recently Inducted into the 2025 York School District Athletic Hall of Fame. He was an avid sports fan and many say a walking encyclopedia in knowing game scores, race results, player histories, etc in just about any sport. He was a dedicated sports memorabilia collector since a teenager and amassed a huge collection of sports cards, hundreds of autographed cards, balls, etc and could tell you the story behind each one. There wasn't a game, whether local or professional, that he didn't enjoy watching. He also loved traveling and would talk for hours about his trips to Europe and the Caribbean. Frankie loved the York community and all the memories it held for him, First Baptist Church of York which he was a member of since a teenager, hotdogs, and blackberry cobbler. Above all he loved family. In loving memory of Frankie, memorial contributions may be made to York Comprehensive High School Athletic Department and First Baptist Church. A very special Thank You to Pastor Tanner Howard and VIA Health Partners, his hospice nurse Jessica, close friends, Steve, Joey, Kenny, Dean and Doc and cousin Mike for caring about and for him in recent weeks. Friends and family are invited to gather on Saturday, October 25 at 11am to meet and greet and enjoy the memory table in his honor and be a part of the Celebration of Life service at 12pm at First Baptist Church, 102 S Congress St, York Sc 29745.
