Austin Ness Obituary

Austin M. Ness YORK Austin M. Ness, 84, died Friday, November 28, 2003 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Yvonne M. (Gladfelter) Ness, his beloved wife to whom he was married for 62 years. A Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m., Tuesday at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York. Officiating the service will be Parish Visitor Roger M. Patches of Christ Lutheran Church in York. A visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., Tuesday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be private in Salem Union Cemetery, Jacobus Borough, with full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Ness was born October 30, 1919 in York, the son of the late Wilbur H. and Esther R. (Patterson) Ness. He was first employed by the Navel Ordnance Plant as an assembler on the production line building anti-aircraft guns for the Navy. He later became a member of their guard force, serving under civil service for six years and then transferred to the Post Office Department. He was a letter carrier in the North York area to complete 30 years of civil service. Mr. Ness was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in York. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a 1937 graduate of York High School. He was a life member of Navel Ordnance Plant Association and a member of National Association of Letter Carriers-Branch 509 in York. He was a member of American Legion Post 0791, National Association of Retired Federal Employees-Chapter 331 in York, 13th Ward Political Association and the Liberty Social Club. Mr. Ness was an avid hunter and fishermen, although he could not decide which he enjoyed the most. He was an original member of his hunting camp in Tioga County. Mr. Ness is also survived by his five daughters, Bonnie M. Karlip of Lancaster, Carole A. Eveler of Goshen, Ind., Sandra J. Fogle of West Linn, Ore., Terry L. Koontz of Red Lion and Kathy S. Gotwalt of York; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pat Slaugh of York; and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 29 S. George St., York, PA 17401.
