Dale Shellenberger Obituary

Dale L. Shellenberger, 71, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at York Hospital. He was the husband of Sandra L. (Phillips) Shel lenberger with whom he was married for 35 years on October 21, 2002. Born December 31, 1930 in Red Lion, a son of the late Nolan M. and Dora M. (Heiss) Shellenberger he graduated from Red Lion Area High School, received his Bachelor Degree from Lebanon Valley College and earned his Masters Degree at Temple University. He was a teacher at Red Lion Area High School for 37 years until his retirement in 1987. During his school years at Red Lion and Lebanon Valley College he participated on the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams and while teaching at Red Lion High School, Mr. Shellenberger coached the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams. He was a football coach when the 1964 Red Lion Football team had their first undefeated season in school history. On October 21, 2000, Mr. Shellenberger was inducted into the Lebanon Valley College Athletic Hall of Fame. Mr. Shellenberger was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church; Red Lion American Legion, Post =543; Pennsylvania State Education Association; Red Lion Booster Club; and AARP. He was a former Red Lion Borough Council member for eight years and served one term as VicePresident. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War where he was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. In addition to his wife, Mr. Shellenberger is survived by a daughter, Katharine M. Snyder of Red Lion; two sons, Dale Matthew Shellenberger of Glen Burnie, Md. and Luke P. Shellenberger of Red Lion; and three grandchildren, Allie, Cole, and Tanner Snyder of Red Lion. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn P. Shellenberger and Nolan Shellenberger. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 45 First Avenue, Red Lion, with his pastors, Rev. Lawrence C. Focht and Rev. Dr. Glenn Dietrich, officiating. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. A viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Home, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Inc., 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032.

The memorial service was a beautiful final tribute to a well liked and respected husband, father, teacher, coach, and friend. "Shelly" will be missed by all who knew him.
