Emory S. Downs

AIRVILLE Emory S. Downs, 81, entered into rest following a brief illness at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at York Hospital. He was the husband of M. Elaine (Flinchbaugh) Downs who preceded him into eternal rest on May 25, 1999. Mr. Downs was born in Red Lion, on August 28, 1926, and was the son of the late James A. and Carrie R. (Shaull) Downs. He was a lifelong farmer at Downs Farms, Airville, and was a United States Army veteran serving in WWII. Mr. Downs was a member of the Pennsylvania Farmer's Assoc.; Airville Volunteer Fire Company, where he served as a trustee on the board; and Chanceford Presbyterian Church, where he sang in the choir for many years and served as trustee, elder, and past Sunday School Superintendent. Mr. Downs is survived by two sons, Michael C. Downs and wife, Sue, and David K. Downs and wife, Donna, both of Airville; three daughters, Sandra E. Keller and husband, Joe, Linda DownsPomraning, and Patricia L. Miller and husband, Herb, all of Airville; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, J. Martin Downs of Airville; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Quentin "Jack" Downs; and one sister, Kathryn Downs. There will be no viewing. Visitation will be 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Chanceford Presbyterian Church, Rt. 425 and Kennedy Roads, Airville. The service will begin at 2 p.m. at the church with his pastor, the Rev. Harry R. Robinson, officiating. Burial will be in Chanceford Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Burg Funeral Home, Inc., 134 W. Broadway, Red Lion, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered to Chanceford Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 56, Airville, PA 17302; or to the Airville Volunteer Fire Company, 3576 Delta Road, Airville, PA 17302.
