George Glatfelter Obituary

SPRING GROVE George H. Glatfelter, 80, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at Cape Regional Hospital in Cape May Court House, N.J. He was the loving husband of Anna L. (Crone) Glatfelter, to whom he was married for 37 years. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the memorial service for Mr. Glatfelter at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 2, 2007, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 201 S. Main St., Spring Grove, with his pastor, the Rev. Daniel V. Biles, III officiating. There will be no viewing. He will be laid to rest privately in Spring Grove Cemetery. Irwin Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Spring Grove is coordinating arrangements. Born December 3, 1926, in York, George was a son of the late Philip H. and Cassandra (McClellan) Glatfelter. Mr. Glatfelter retired in 1987 as Vice-President of Manufacturing following 40 years of loyal service with the P.H. Glatfelter Company in Spring Grove. George attended the Cheshire Academy in Connecticut and following graduation enlisted in the United States Maritime Service, proudly serving with the Merchant Marines. Following duty to his country, George began his career at the P.H. Glatfelter Co. on April 4, 1947, as a lab sampler in the technical department, eventually working in each manufacturing department before becoming mill manager and mill superintendent. In 1970 he rose to the position of Vice-President of Manufacturing and became a member of the company's Board of Directors. George was instrumental in directing major expansions of the Spring Grove mill and the Company experienced tremendous growth under his leadership. Investments in large-scale papermaking, the addition of offline paper coating capability, and leading-edge improvements in environmental technology were all completed under his guidance. These improvements combined to make the mill one of the most versatile operating platforms in the paper industry, and formed the foundation for the Glatfelter Company of today. His colleagues will remember George as a 'hands-on' manager who listened more than he talked, and who formed strong and respectful relationships with employees at all levels of the company. Mr. Glatfelter served the local area as a member of the Board of Directors for York Country Day School, York Junior Achievement, York YMCA, Western Michigan University Paper Institute, P.H. Glatfelter Co., and the Glatfelter Pulp Wood Company. He was a member of the Mill Quarter Century Club and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. George enjoyed his memberships in the Country Club of York; the Laurel Fish and Game and the Buck Club of Tree Farm No. 1, both in Adams County; and the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla. He loved the outdoors in all its forms and shared his enjoyment in memorable ways with his family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife, Anna, George leaves three children, George H. Glatfelter, II and Susan G. Messersmith, both of Spring Grove, and Phillip H. Glatfelter, IV of York; two stepsons, Joseph E. Crisamore, Jr. of Spring Grove and Ronald E. Crisamore of Hanover; six grandchildren, Andrew and Timothy Glatfelter, Laura and Bradley Wilson, and Katherine and Alexander Glatfelter; and two stepgrandchildren, Sierra Crisamore and Joseph Crisamore, III. He was preceded in death by three brothers, William L., Philip H., II, and Theodore McC. Glatfelter; and a sister, Elizabeth G. Rosenmiller of York. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Glatfelter may be made to Cape Regional Hospital, 2 Stone Harbor Blvd., Cape May Court House, NJ, 08210. My dad, Nick Vigoletti, was a long-time employee of the Glatfelter company and always spoke well of the Glatfelter family. He often said that they were fine people that respected their employees, and he was proud to represent their company. Our sympathies to the family and our prayers at this difficult time of loss...
