Jack Horsfall

YORK Jack Horsfall, 94, died on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Gladys M. (Ness) Horsfall. Born on June 19, 1916, in Oldham, Lancashire, England, he was the son of the late Fred and Ethel (Cliff) Horsfall. Mr. Horsfall was an electrician for Harold M. Gettle Electrical Contractors. After his retirement, he worked as a tour guide at the HarleyDavidson Motorcycle Museum. Two of the people he guided through the museum were former President Ronald Reagan and Jay Leno. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1936 until 1946 and served in the South Pacific from Guadalcanal to Saipan during World War II. During his time in the Army, he witnessed the explosion of the Hindenburg in Lakehurst, N.J., and the take off of the Enola Gay for the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary for 20 years, where he was Flotilla Commander, York, in 1976, and Columbia from 1984-1985, and was the Division Captain, Susquehanna Division from 19881989. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves serving for three years during the Korean War in New Jersey. Jack was a member of the White Rose Lodge #706 F&AM; the Harrisburg Consistory; Zembo Temple; York Forest #30, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; York County Shrine Club; Mt. Zion Lodge #74, I.O.O.F.; the Red Lion V.F.W. Post #1446; the Pleasureville American Legion Post # 799; the 112th Field Artillery Assoc.; the York County Shrine Club; and the Loyal Order of Moose, Hanover. Following cremation, a graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mount Rose Cemetery, 1502 Mount Rose Ave., York. Everyone is invited to meet at the entrance of the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Graveside military rites will be performed by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
