Jacob Gingerich Obituary

NEWARK, DE Jacob "Jack" Christian Gingerich, Sr., 96, formerly of York, went home to be with his Savior on Thursday, September 1, 2011, at the home of his grandson in Newark. He was the husband of Dorothy A. (Yingling) Gingerich, who died in 1949, and Hazel A. (Slenker) Gingerich, who died 2010. Jack and Hazel were married 58 years. Jack was born in Glades, York County, a son of the late Edmund and Lizzie (Wanbaugh) Gingerich. He attended North York High School and received his G.E.D. in Collingswood, N.J. He worked for York Shipley and the U.S. Naval Ordnance Plant in York, and retired from McGuire Air Force Base, Lakehurst, N.J., in 1979 after 33 years of Civil Service. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, serving with the "Seabees" in Nagasaki, Japan. He played semi-pro baseball in York and Lancaster leagues during the 1930's, playing several years for the Pleasureville "Hawks" in York County. While in York, he was active in the local Christian Business Men's Committee. He was a member of Ogletown Baptist Church, Newark, Del. Mr. Gingerich is survived by a son, Jacob C. Gingerich, Jr. (Donnalene) of York; a daughter, Teresa A. Jones (James) of Dixon, Calif.; a granddaughter, Joy Williams (Jon) of York; a grandson, Michael Bailey (Amanda) of Newark, Del.; and two great-grandchildren, Jenna Williams and Bowman Bailey. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Heber Gingerich, Luther Gingerich, and Guy Gingerich; and three sisters, Carrie Bupp, Margaret Baney Shaffer, and Ruth Shue. A special thanks to Delaware Hospice for the loving care provided to Jack and his family during this difficult time. A service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701 officiated by the Rev. Lloyd Evans.
