New Freedom
John C. Lutter, 89, died Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at his home. He was the husband of the late Frances R. (Boll) Lutter, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.
Public viewings will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with a rosary service beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. The funeral liturgy will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (Historic Church), 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, PA 17349 with the Rev. Robert A. Yohe, Jr. and the Rev. Sylvan P. Capitani concelebrating. Interment will follow the service at St. John the Baptist Cemetery with full military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
Born May 7, 1926, in New Freedom, John was a son of the late Conrad and Sophia (Keller) Lutter.
John was proud to be a poultry farmer and raised chicks and layers, producing eggs which he sold door-to-door on seven routes in the York area. He also worked in the poultry industry as a salesman for Hy-Line Hatcheries. In later years, he worked as a building contractor and was a partner in Lutter Masonry & Carpentry from 1981-1991. He was a former member of both the York County Poultry and Builders Associations.
John was a U.S. Army Veteran who served during WWII in the 340th Engineer Construction Battalion. He was a former president and member of the New Freedom Borough Council, a former member of the Borough Authority, and a lifelong member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Victoria E. Steinfelt and her husband, James of Yuma, Ariz.; six sons, Lawrence A. Lutter and his wife, Marion of Glen Rock, John A. Lutter and his wife, Ann, Gregory V. Lutter and his wife, Trish, David E. Lutter and his wife, Bunny, Christopher P. Lutter and his wife Caren, and Matthew C. Lutter and his wife, Bonny, all of New Freedom; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sister Elizabeth Therese Lutter of Ashton. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel P. Lutter; two sisters, Rosa Amspacher and Loretta Amspacher; and a brother, Ambrose O. Lutter.
Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 3544 N. Progress Ave., Suite 204, Harrisburg, PA 17110; or to St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church at the above address.
