Kevin Young Obituary

YOUNG, Kevin A., age 58, of Dayton, formerly of York, PA passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Kevin was born April 19, 1962 in Baltimore, MD to Cornelius and Juliette (Burney) Young. He graduated high school in Falls Church, Virginia, and began his distinguished career with the Marine Corps. Kevin enlisted from 1980-1991, serving as a Bulk Fuel Specialist, Recruiter, and Marksman Instructor; and was awarded numerous commendations, including, the Good Conduct Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. It was while he served as a recruiter that Kevin met the love of his life and future wife Tracy Beck. Following his assignment with the Marines he went on to get his BA from Phoenix University. In his second career Kevin worked for the USPS, where his military background proved useful for making numerous Post Offices more efficient. He and his family traveled the country wherever he was needed, making many friends along the way. Kevin had the distinct honor as being the first African-American to become Postmaster for the city of Spartanburg, SC. In 2018 he retired as Postmaster of the Dayton region. He had an adventurous spirit and a love of travel, always taking the road less traveled. Kevin always put others before himself, a trait which made him numerous friends, many of whom were spread out all over the country, but all of whom were dear to him. Many thought of Kevin as a mentor and leader, as he was always one to help guide others in life. He was a devoted family man who loved nothing more than to spend time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Kevin is preceded in death by his parents, Cy and Judy; and firstborn son Kevin Antonio Young Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Tracy; children, Tiffany (Charles) Cannon, Antonio Young, and Witlee Young; grandchildren, Titan Young, Charlee Cannon, and Rhea Young; sister, Tonya Cary; brother Stephan Young; beloved dog Max; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. A private family service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.routsong.com.

I first met Kevin in 1993 while he was working as a letter carrier in York PA and, noticing his ability, promoted him first to a supervisor position, then to a Manager. As it turned out, he was an excellent Manager but an even better friend! He will be missed.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work for you in the Seattle District Post Offices. You were great boss that knew how to dress. You would walk into a meeting with so much swag. Wearing your 3 piece suit topped and a hat. You not only looked professional you were a professional except when you would take out your bag of gummy worms and start chowing down right in the meeting. lol I'm forever grateful to you for helping me get to the position I’m in now. You will truly be missed by all that knew you.

I worked with Mr. Young at the York Post Office, and he was an outstanding carrier, supervisor, and manager. I knew when I first met Kevin that he was very ambitious, and that York was just a stepping stone for bigger and better things in his future. He loved his family, and was proud of his children. Being a Marine he knew what the word loyalty meant. Working with him made me (a Marine) a better person. My condolences to Tracy and his children. Semper Fi Marine.

My friend and mentor, I can't believe you are gone. I will miss all the fun times we had all over the country. We took down some offices and turned them around doing what we do. Love you brother, I will cast that fishing line out that we never got to cast. Tracy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I'm at a loss for words. You're all in my thoughts and prayers.
