Lynette, We graduated from West York together (Sue Zahn) and even though we haven't been in touch, I read about your son in our paper here in Fredericksburg, VA and had to let you know that my prayers are with you. I have many friends that have husbands, sons, daughters etc, in Afghanistan and Iraq; your son gave his life to his country and you should be very proud. I hope you keep all the great memories of his life in your heart forever...you will never forget him. He was a hero and always will be...God Bless, Sue

I was at Arlington National Cemetery yesterday (3/27/08) with 3 other USMC Leatherneck Pipe & Drum personel to visit a friend KIA. While visiting Trane I witnessed a young woman and two small children behind me. All three cried and scratched at dirt that was between they and a young man I later found out was Cpl. Runyan.

I felt a heart-wrenching ache, and tried to say something but couldnt complete it without crying.

So, if you somehow receive this:

Thank you for laying such a costly sacrifice upon the alter of freedom.
God bless you.

I will never forget you that day...and for the rest of the time God allows me...whenever visiting Major McCloud I will be sure to salute Luke.

Nothing can be said or done to ease the pain that you are experiencing. I will always remember the good times Luke and I shared together. He taught us all how to live our lives to the fullest and hold no regrets. His life ended in a tragic way, but he left this earth fighting for a cause that he strongly believed in. Luke is truly a hero. He will forever remain in our hearts. To Luke's family, just know that I am here for you should you ever need anything. Rest in peace my friend...

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I was born and raised in Hanover, PA. My heart is with you. I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I met this outstanding boy in 1996, I loved the way he entertained his mother!
Funny, comical and always on the go!!!
I miss him so much, but I am so happy that his mother and I were able to see him at Christmas.
He looked well but we had no idea that this would be the last time we would see him. He was happy to be home, to see his wife and daughter!!
Yesterday we buried him at Arlington.............My life will never be the same...weeping with pride & sorrow. His other Dad, Bill
Good night my son!!

To the family of Luke,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you through this unbelievable time in your life. You have and will always have Luke, and thanks to you and your sacrifice, we have a hero that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

"To a Fallen Hero
You shall never be forgotten for though you may be gone from this world, your spirit will live forever. It lives in the laughing eyes of Brynn who is free from want and oppression. If lives in the bravery and conviction of those who still struggle for liberty. And it lives in me, for I promise to cherish every breath of freedom that you paid the ultimate price to secure. I ask only that I might be granted some small fraction of your courage and strength, to face the challenges of my life with an honor and dignity worthy of your legacy. May you rest in eternal peace, safe in the knowledge that your sacrifice was not made in vain."

We also lost our son, Spc. Zachary Clouser, in July 2007 and still find it unbelieveable at times. He is always with us and the memories of him as a child, young adult, and a soldier pour to the forefront of our thoughts daily.

As hard as it may be, please try to find peace in your heart and know that Luke is always with you.

Please feel free to contact us. Although we never met, we now share a special bond.

Courtney and Family,

No one can ease your grief at this sad time,
But, many share your feelings of loss.
Your Husband was someone who was
cared about and respected;
He believed in his promise and duty
To you and his Country.
Someone who brought pride, playful risks,
comfort and joy to all who knew him.

We just wish there were some special words
to say to you today; The sort of words that might
some how take loneliness away.
It may be just that knowing how much others
really care can bring your heart an inner peace
and ease the longing there.

Times with Luke were special and all too quickly have passed.
He filled your world with unending love and memories that will last.
As you look at Brynn, you will always feel the love
that created her, carry that in your heart today and always.

He will be missed, but never forgotten
Our Thoughts and Prayers are with you
Courtney and Brynn, as well as your loving
Parents Cal and Kristi, and Brother Carter.

I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. My deepest condolences to the family of Luke Runyan. He is a true hero and will be remembered by our family as we remember and pray for all our heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. I know how painful and gut wrenching it is to lose a son. I am also a Gold Star Mother and my son SFC Brent Adams was KIA in Ramadi, Iraq on 12-1-05. He too has a child so all we can do is keep that memory of them in our hearts and tell our grandchildren what wonderful and honorable men their daddys were.

There will come a day
when your tears of sorrow
will softly flow into tears of remembrance...
and your heart will begin to heal itself...
and grieving will be interrupted by episodes of joy...
and you will hear the whisper of hope.
There will come a day
when you will welcome the tears of remembrance...
as a sunshower of the soul...
a turning of the tide...
a promise of peace.
There will come a day when you will...
risk loving...
go on believing...
and treasure the tears of remembering.

God Bless you and give you peace. If you need a listening ear please don't hesitate to contact us.

My prayers and thoughts are with all who knew Luke, his wife and daughter. My partner wrote a song about a month ago that we are recording next week. After I heard the news, these words in the song definately took new life~

"somebody's lover,
a little girl's father is gone
she said mama, where is daddy
I sure miss him
He's gone to heaven
with the angels"

I'll be sure the family gets a copy when it's finished.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

To the Runyan family,

I know at this time there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Lukes' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Father we entrust our brother Luke to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Luke in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" ~Rev 21:4
What a wonderful thought...
May God bless Spc Luke S. Runyan, God bless you and your family and God bless America!

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Specialist Runyan. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!
