Roy Ashton Obituary

Roy E. Ashton, 80, died at 6:45 a.m. Friday, November 26, 2004, at his home. He was the husband of Helen M. (Heindel) Ash ton with whom he celebrated a 56th wedding anniversary on June 26th. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2004, at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Home, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with military rites by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Viewing will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Officiating at the service will be his pastor, the Rev. James E. VanZandt. Mr. Ashton was born November 2, 1924, in Red Lion. He was the son of the late Harry F. and Grace I. (Bull) Ashton. He was a 1942 graduate of Red Lion Area High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Mr. Ashton was a Locksmith and Carpenter, retiring from the Engineering Department of York Hospital in 1989. He had previously worked at the Red Lion Cabinet Co. and various Red Lion area construction firms. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church and a member of the Red Lion VFW and American Legion. An avid fisherman and hunter, he was a founding member of the Forest Edge Hunting Club. Mr. Ashton also leaves his son, Dennis Ashton and wife, Lonna, of York; two daughters, Carol Ashton of Pocatello, Idaho and Julie Wire and husband, William, of Dallastown; four granddaughters, Marni, Kami, Jenna, and Tessa; and a greatgranddaughter, Kera. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arlington Ashton; and three sisters, Theda Bitner, Fern McSherry and Ruth Ashton. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice, 218 E. Market St., York, PA 17403; or the American Lung Association, 488 W. Market St., York, PA 17404.
