Walter Allen Obituary
Walter T. Allen, 91, of Beaumont at Bryn Mawr and for merly of York, died Saturday, January 11, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. in Lankenhau Hospital, Wynnewood, Pa. He was the husband of Irene (Smith) Allen. The couple observed their 69th wedding anniversary on September 1, 2002. He was born on January 7, 1912 in Richmond, Va., a son of the late Roy Jefferson and Lillian (Williams) Allen. He retired in 1977 as President and Chairman of the Board of House of Windsor, which was a wholly owned subsidiary of the U.S. Tobacco Company. In 1976, he was nominated to the Tobacco Hall of Fame by the National Association of Tobacco Distributors. Since retirement, he had been teaching Fly Tying with proceeds going to Boy Scouts of America. He came to York in 1946 from Texas. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of Saint John the Baptist; member of the National Rifle Association, Kentucky Colonel, Laurel Fish and Game Club, and York-Adams Gun Club; a former member of the Country Club of York; and one of the founders of the June Ball in 1955. He was an avid golfer. He also held several Pa. State Senior Skeet Titles. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Irene Newton of Clio, S.C., and Sally A. Allen of Wynnewood, Pa.; three grandchildren, Laura Wentz of Philadelphia, John D. Wentz of Bethesda, Md. and Walter Allen Robbins of S.C.; a great-granddaughter, Sophie Lee Wentz of Bethesda, Md.; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a grandson, John Robbins. Following cremation a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 25th, at The Episcopal Church of Saint John the Baptist, 140 N. Beaver Street, York, with the Rev. David W. Lovelace, his pastor, officiating. Burial in Memorial Garden of The Episcopal Church of Saint John the Baptist. The Etzweiler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market Street, York, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, 2139 White Street, York, PA 17404.
