William Kirk Obituary

YORK William P. Kirk, 75, died at Monday, October 26, 2009, at the Moravian Manor, in Lititz. Born July 19, 1934, in Coatsville, he was the son of the late William A. and Mildred {Parthemore} Kirk. He was a former major league baseball player, and a retired advertising and marketing executive. After his retirement, he served as a tipstaff at the York County Court House primarily for Judge Dorney. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of York, Zeredatha Lodge, No. 451, Free and Accepted Masons; and The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Assoc. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Although he called York his home, Mr. Kirk spent much of his life in Lancaster. As a young man, Billy, as he was known then, built his own racer and entered the 1949 all-American Soap Box Derby competition. He won the local race and traveled to Akron, Ohio for the national competition. Mr. Kirk graduated from J. P. McCaskey in 1952. During high school he was a gifted athlete excelling in both soccer and baseball. Upon graduation, he was offered a scholarship to West Chester University, but chose instead to accept a minor league pitching contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1954, he signed a major league contract with the Philadelphia Athletics. Mr. Kirk joined the Kansas City Athletics baseball team in 1955. He returned to Lancaster for a winning season with the Lancaster Red Roses, where he pitched a no-hitter at Stumpf Field in July of 1960. He rejoined Kansas City and finished his career with them in 1962. In 1964 he became a player/coach for the York White Roses, which was the farm team for the Washington Senators. Mr. Kirk loved baseball and was involved in some aspect of the sport his entire life. Mr. Kirk will be deeply missed by his daughter, Kelly Kirk-Wentzel and her husband, Eric of Lititz; two sons, Matthew W. Kirk and his wife, Deborah of Lancaster, and Chadd C. Kirk of New York City; six grandchildren, Kirk Daniel, Marenthia Lourdes, Walker, Savannah, Harrison and Jacklyn; and a sister, Midge Thomas of LA. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jean Rutter. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, at First Presbyterian Church of York, 225 E. Market St., with his Pastor, the Rev. Dr. John E. Morgan, officiating. Visitations will be 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, 863 S. George St., York, {the former Hahn Home} and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Susan Byrnes Health Education Center, 515 S. I was honored to have spent time with Bill for the past two years when he traveled to Kansas City to attend the Kansas City A's baseball reunion. He was a wonderful gentleman to chat with, full of wonderful stories about baseball and his family. He touched many lives and his impact will be felt forever. Thanks for the memories, Bill. The KC Baseball Historical Society extends its sympathy and prayers to Kelly and all of Bill's family.

I knew your father when he was a bailiff for Judge Leslie Gorbey in Lancaster and I was a law clerk. It has been 12 years since I last saw your father, but I can remember him as if it were yesterday. It was the highlight of our day when we knew Bill was in the courtroom! What amazing charm, grace, charisma, intelligence, and humor - Bill had it all. He often spoke of his children and grandchildren and your accomplishments, always with that warm twinkle in his eyes. I was so sad to see that he passed away so young. My most sincere condolences to you on your loss and hopes that the cherished memories of your father are always with you, as he no doubt will be.

Dear Kelly, Matt, Chadd and family-
So long ago my childhood memories of growing up in York and your father has always been a very fond part of those memories. So kind and cheerful. A smile that you never outgrow or forget so many years later. We wish you all peace as he rests and our deepest sympathies to you all as you say your goodbyes, for now.

Dear Matt, Kelly, Chadd, Sid and family-
I was saddened to hear this news. When things like this happen it makes you stop and remember times that you thought you had forgotten. Last night, I remembered standing with Matt and Bill on a warm day in Hempfield watching Chadd play baseball. I remember laughing non-stop - Matt jabbing at his Dad and him back at Matt and all three of us heckling Chadd. And then we saw Kelly driving past the diamond ... and we set our sites on her. I remember her walking up to us and saying "what are you guys up to? - no good probably" They are all fond memories.
If there is one thing that I will always remember about your father is that he loved all of you so much. There was never a time that I can think of where he didn't take the opportunity to show people how proud he was of his kids. Few people live there lives letting people know how much they care about you - you should have comfort in that.

Bill and I were childhood friends. We went through Elementary school, Jr. high and high school together. We lived only a few houses apart. I have many fond memories of our childhood together. When Bill left to play pro ball we lost track of each other. It was only a few days ago that I was thinking of those days.Sure wish that we could have reconnected. My condolences to the family. I know he will be missed. L.E.'Gene' Keller

So long Bill. We had many business and baseball discussions. Oldtimers will miss you. You were 75 years young. Sorry I haven't seen you in 7 years or so but I thought of you sometimes thru my travels overseas last 5 years. If there is a baseball heaven I'm sure your throwing lots of strikes. Take care and now you can rest.

We lost a great friend and baseball man this week - Bill Kirk. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill's family and friends. After his professional baseball career, Bill was a Pitching Coach at York Township for several years in the early 80s. He continued supporting Township Baseball attending games and helping players. A longtime scout for the Atlanta Braves, he always followed and supported local York County baseball. Bill gave us some great baseball memories and wonderful stories of his playing days. A class act all the way. No one could handle a "discussion" with an umpire like Bill. We all admired, loved, and respected him. Thanks for being part of our lives, Bill. We love you. And we will miss you. - JW
