Carol Jean Spahn

May 6, 1940 - September 10, 2025

Carol Jean Spahn, age 85, of York, Neb., passed away September 10, 2025 at her home in York.

Memorial services will be held Friday, September 19, 2025 at 10 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Stromsburg with Pastor Keet Redden officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sutton Cemetery following the service at 2:30 p.m.

Carol was born May 6, 1940 in Scottsbluff, Neb. to Carl Fred and Dorothy Marie (Blundell) Summerville. She attended school in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1958. She continued her education at Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, graduating in 1961 and then attended Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing getting her degree in 1964.

On September 7, 1964 she was united in marriage to Melvin Eugene Spahn in Mitchell. To this union four children were born. The family lived in Hastings, Juniata, Sutton and Norfolk. Carol moved to Shanghai, China where she worked as a nurse (at WorldLink Clinic, then Shanghai American School) and was involved in many ministries (at the Int'l Church, and with an orthotics ministry traveling to villages, and establishing a 24-7 Shanghai house of prayer) for 11 years.

She returned to Mitchell to care for her mother, moving to York in 2014 where she volunteered daily at the Hope Gospel Rescue Mission. Carol was the organist and served in many ministries at the Hastings Berean Church and Calvary Bible Church in Henderson. She also worked at the Sutton Nursing Home, the Hastings Regional Center and the Norfolk Regional Center.

Survivors include her children, Charis (Gary) Buell of Chicago, Ill., Lee (Ali) Spahn of Osceola, Lois (Doug) Romaine of Orlando, Fla., and Jason Spahn of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren; sister, Jane (David) Jenkins of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Jim (Penny) Summerville of Monroe, LA and Gene (Cristina) Summerville of Medford, Ore.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her parents, Carl and Dorothy Summerville and infant sister, Shirley Kay.

Memorials are suggested to Hope Gospel Rescue Mission, York, Neb. or the ALS Foundation.
