ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — Billy Marshall Thompson, 79, loving and beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2016 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Mr. Thompson was born Dec. 12, 1936 in Richmond County, a son of the late George Daniel and Monnie Kate McInnis Thompson. He had served his country in the United States Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was a Certified Public Accountant. He was a devoted Christian and a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church in Rockingham. He was a member of Rockingham Lodge No. 495 AF & AM, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Oasis Temple of the Shrine. He had also been a member of the Rotary Club and served on the Richmond Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Daniel; brothers, Jack, Leon and David Thompson; and a sister, Mary Blanche Thompson Black.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Jo Ann Ussery Thompson of the home; children, Marshall "Mark" Thompson (Donna) of Monroe, Patricia "Trish" Thompson McGee (Wade) of Rockingham; grandchildren, Graham Marshall Thompson, Jenna Grace McGee, Joshua Wade McGee, Jarod Clifton McGee; brother, Carey Thompson of Ellerbe; and sisters, Claire Robinson of Candor, Sarah Abrams of Rockingham and Helen Simmons of Ellerbe.
The family will see friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dwight Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery.
