EAGLE SPRINGS, N.C. — Lois Carolyn Harrison Blue passed away at her home in Eagle Springs on Sunday, April 24, 2016.
Carolyn was the daughter of the late Howard Russell and Lois Eugenia Hendren Harrison and was predeceased by her sister, Virginia H. Monroe; and brothers, Edward N. Harrison and Howard R. Harrison II.
The love of family, flowers and dedication to her Presbyterian faith was most important to her. As a former member of Bensalem Presbyterian Church, and in more recent years Macedonia Presbyterian Church in Candor, you could find her busy with church leadership as a deacon and elder, choir member and involved in all church activities. For many years she grew and arranged the alter flowers for worship services. In Sept. 1995, she received the Honorary Lifetime Membership for Presbyterian Women for her dedicated service to the church at Bensalem.
She was chairperson of the area's Cancer Crusade for many years and in years past served on the Board of Trustees of Moore Regional Hospital.
Carolyn spent a lifetime in the petroleum distribution industry with the last 35 years as owner and operator of Candor Oil Company.
She had a strong interest in politics and government since childhood that she inherited from her father. In 1956, she was the secretary of the Young Democrats, progressing to vice chair and chairman. She was a Democratic National Committee woman attending the inauguration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1972, she was the 8th District delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami, Florida.
In 1976, she was the first women in 192 years to serve on the Moore County Board of Commissioners. In the July 25, 1979 edition of The Pilot, the Spotlight section led with the caption "Commissioner Carolyn Blue has 'The Spirit of Compromise.'" She led with honor and integrity and understood when compromise was needed to best serve the citizens of Moore County.
Surviving is her husband of 69 years, Harold Blue; son, Tommy Blue (Libby) of Eagle Springs; daughters, Sharon Blue Reid (Bobby Wheeler) of Pinehurst, Christy Blue Jackson (John) of Greensboro; sister, Patricia H. Parker of Plymouth; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Matt Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Bensalem Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Macedonia Presbyterian Church, 3269 Candor-Troy Road, Biscoe, NC 27209 or FirstHealth Hospice Foundation, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374 in Carolyn's name.
