Janet Hogan Obituary

NORMAN, N.C. — With a smile on her face and a song in her heart, Janet Johnson Hogan gracefully entered into Heaven on Sunday, March 18, 2018.

Janet entered this world in Montgomery County, on March 26, one of five children born to Marvin and Elizabeth Kellis Johnson. She was a graduate of Candor High School and Wingate College, where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education. Janet taught Kindergarten for a few years, but her true love and calling was music, theater and the world of pageantry. Janet's love for music began at an early age when she and her sisters sang together as The Johnson Sisters. Her love for music carried on throughout her life through playing the piano and directing the choir at her church and directing many community choirs. She grew up in Sardis United Methodist Church and later became a member and Sunday school teacher at Norman United Methodist Church.

Janet was an accomplished actress, playing lead roles in numerous community theater productions across the state. She was very involved in the Miss North Carolina Pageant organization, serving as a judge, master of ceremonies and an entertainer. She was known for her quick wit and her love for her family and friends. Janet was very civic-minded and cared so much for Richmond County and the town of Norman. She never met a stranger. In fact, wherever she went, if she didn't know someone when she got there, she did by the time she left.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Philip Hogan; a precious granddaughter, Taylor Stewart; her brother, Elwood Johnson; and sister, Iris Bovender.

Surviving are her children, Marva Hogan Allen (Mike) of Star, Tonya Hogan of Asheville, Lorrie Hogan Stewart of Ellerbe; grandchildren, Melissa Brown (Nick), Preston Allen and Nick Allen; brother, Garrett Johnson of Candor and sister, Juanita McCallum of Candor.

Family and friends will gather for a celebration of Janet's life at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018, at Norman United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joe Wilburn officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved Philip in the Norman Cemetery.

In following Janet's wishes to return to Candor one more time, she will lie in state at Briggs Candor Funeral Home from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday and at Norman United Methodist Church from noon until the funeral hour. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall of Norman United Methodist Church from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Friday.

A very special thank you is extended to Kenneth Broadway, Dana Little, Annette Wilson, Brittany Arnott, Kim Buckner, Dr. Margaret Noel and the staff of Memory Care of Asheville, Arbor Terrace Assisted Living Center and Brooks-Howell Home for their kind and compassionate care for Janet.

I have fond memories of both your mom and dad. Tonya was my student in second grade when Koo Koo the Kangaroo was introduced to the public, and I remember all three of you. Your mom was such a joy to be around. She will be missed by so many. Sending my love and my sincere Condolences to you all.

I am so sorry to see that Janet is gone and know that you will miss her. She was a delightful and lovely lady. I enjoyed the years she served as a library trustee for the Richmond County Libraries.

Marva, Tonya, and Lorrie , I am very sad to hear about your mother. She was a wonderful woman and I loved her dearly. When I was a student in her kindergarten class , she picked me up each morning and took me with her to school. I haven't seen her in several years, but always asked Mom and Dad about her. You are all in my prayers.

Marva, Tonya, and Lorrie, I am truly saddened hearing of your dear Mother's passing. Not only was she a lovely lady but such a kind, caring spirit among all others. " Cuckoo the Kangaroo" was an assets to Richmond Academy during the days we had the pleasure of working there. My son, Shawn, has repeatedly reflected on the fact that his first grade teacher was a opera singer and song writer. Linda Taylor, your 4th grade teacher
