Charles Wullenjohn Obituary

Charles Chris Wullenjohn Jr.

January 9, 1952 - January 17, 2025

Charles Chris Wullenjohn, Jr., known to all as Chuck, passed away on Jan. 17, 2025, at the age of 73. A kind-hearted, funny and very loving man, Chuck will be forever missed by his devoted wife of 42 years, Lorraine; his sister, Patti; brothers, Bill and Rob, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who thought the world of him. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mary Wullenjohn; his sister, Carole, and his beloved daughter, Amanda.

Raised in Sunnyvale, CA, Chuck had a special connection with his family and close friends. He was a proud graduate of Humboldt State University where he earned his degree in Social Science. Chucks career was marked by service, both as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, where he served for 27 years and as Public Affairs Officer at U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground from 1989 to 2018. He took great pride in these roles, but for Chuck the most important part of life wasn't his work -it was the relationships he built. Whether it was teaching political science at Arizona Western College for 30 years, serving on the Yuma County Library Board for eight years, or sharing stories with family and friends, Chucks warmth, kindness and sense of humor made him who he was.

Chuck was a life-long history buff with the knack for making droll facts and figures come alive. The hundreds of hours of meticulous research that went into his book, "Decision on Corregidor", from reading obscure eyewitness accounts to interviewing aged veterans, is a testament both to his relentless search for accuracy and the intellectual pact he forged with his readers. Throughout his life, Chuck balanced a deep love of history, travel, and learning with a genuine commitment to his family. Whether it was through his numerous written works, his photos, or his homemade films, Chucks legacy will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for the love, joy, and laughter he gave to his family.

A Celebration of Life service was held February 22, 2025, at 1:00 pm at Lima Mortuary in Santa Clara.

Mr. Wullenjohn was my Political Science professor, he was able to make horrible situation bearable, trying to see the true intent of our history with an all-encompassing passion for the truths and facts that he so eloquently laid before us. I treasured that class and couldn't have had a better person to teach me the nastiness of Politics with such clarity it was almost poetic. I morn all those that will not hear him speak or listen, but me and many others will keep him alive in our speaking of his teaching. Rest in Peace Mr. Wullenjohn.

Chuck was indeed a very smart, warm person. The Yuma community was better for him being in it. Condolences to Lorraine and his family.
