Fred Hoffmeyer Obituary

Fred W. Hoffmeyer

December 28, 1942 - March 7, 2025

Fred Hoffmeyer passed to Heaven on March 7, 2025 in Yuma, Arizona. His loving and devoted family was by his side. He was born in Flagstaff and raised in Williams, Arizona. He was 82 years old.

Fred graduated from Williams High School in 1960, where he excelled in athletics. He attended Arizona State College in Flagstaff where he was a member of the ASC Rodeo Club and was voted to be the Second Ugliest Man on Campus. He graduated with a degree in Agricultural Business from Arizona State University in 1967; he was a member of the ASU Rodeo Club.

Always working, he was a ranch hand through his high school summers where he learned to love roping. He worked for the Arizona State Highway Department Survey Crew and drove a snow plow. In college he worked at the ASC cafeteria, drove a cement truck, and worked construction; then he worked at the ASU Poultry Farm, for Motorola, and for Early Fat Feed. After graduation, he went through a training program with the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank in Berkeley, CA where he worked in offices in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

Fred married Carolyn Smith, his college sweetheart, in 1967, and the next summer they moved to Yuma, to be here one year; he had a job waiting for him elsewhere. However, as he always said, they met all the 'wrong' people who got them involved in Yuma activities, and stayed for the next 57 years.

He was involved as a 4-H Beef Leader, with the Junior Livestock Committee; he coached Babe Ruth Baseball and Grid Kids Football and Crane Country Boys' Baseball. (He always enjoyed being called "Other Dad" by so many special Yuma kids.) He was a member of the Yuma Elks Lodge 476, the Yuma Ag Committee, and the Yuma County Sheriff's Posse. He continued to rope for several years.

For 40 years, until his retirement, Fred worked for Production Credit Association, which evolved into AgWest Farm Credit. He worked with those involved in all phases of agriculture in Southern Yuma County and Imperial County. He always spoke very highly of the fine people with whom he came in contact in these areas.

Fred served as a member of the YRMC Board of Directors for many years, as president and in many other capacities. He served on the Hospice of Yuma Board of Directors as president and in other capacities. He was a major entity in fund raising events for both organizations. He transported and set up thousands of tables and chairs for the events in the Yuma-area. In later years, he cooked tri-tip dinners for charitable events and for school fund-raising.

In 2007, he received the Heart of Yuma award for Outstanding Leader. In 2011, Hospice of Yuma presented him with the Spirit of Hospice Angel award, and in 2011, he was presented the Yuma Citizen of the Year award.

Fred was preceded in death by his father, Edward M.

Hoffmeyer; his mother, Aline A. Funkey, and his brother, Edward Hoffmeyer.

He is survived by his loving wife Carolyn, of 58 years, and their special children, son, Johnny (Mona), and daughter Kori (Rob Rousseau). He has five very incredible grandchildren - Maryn, Liam, Rori, Randon, and Russell. They were so special to him; he was a very proud Capa! He was close to his two sisters-in-law - Sandra (Mack) McKeon and Nancy (Wally) Delecki, both in Gilbert.

There were so many wonderful friends and people in his life- he had so many fond and incredible memories throughout his 82 years. At his specific request, no services are being held; he knew that he was going to be with the Lord. Johnson Mortuary arranged cremation. He did ask that everyone say a quick

Thank-You God prayer, and that you remember a special occurrence that you might have been involved in together. He knew he would enter Heaven with a grateful heart full of love, and special memories.

Please know that I am sincerely grateful for your husband's life, Carolyn, and that I know Heaven awaits for you (and for me, now that my Bob is there, too). Prayers for you as your adjust. I wish I had known you more personally, but I hold you in great regard.

I always knew that living in Yuma was a most special gift for my family, being surrounded by great families, caring and loving adults, people who shared their time and talents for the betterment of the community. Fred Hoffmeyer and his spouse Carolyn were among that group of citizens that brought out the best of those they encountered. Those years were truly magical for my family and like the easy living in Camelot, they are gone too soon. Thank you Fred for making Yuma such a Yuman place to live and raise a family. You will be heartily missed.
