Michael Spain Obituary

After a short illness, Michael Lensch Spain passed at his home in Wellton, Arizona on Saturday, November 5, 2016. Mick, as he was also known, was born on January 26, 1934 in Davenport, Iowa. Mick and his Sister Patsy Ward were the only two children of his Mother Nola A. Lensch Spain and his Father Marceda Ligouri Spain.

Mick obtained a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Notre Dame and a Master's degree in English Literature from Columbia University before venturing into his career in education. Mick taught English at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden Colorado before becoming an English Professor at Arizona Western College where he taught for twenty-six years.

Mick is survived by his loving wife Rose Marie Carter Spain, his three sons Mark Spain, Matthew Spain and Peter Spain; his two daughters Michelle Spain Hinkle and Laura Spain as well as six grandchildren and one stepson with twin grandsons.

In retirement, Mick enjoyed shooting pool and fly fishing as his favorite activities, after football.

There will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be provided to the Yuma County Humane society.

I signed up for Freshman English (comp) and had Mr. Spain. Our first assignment was to write about a subject very near and dear to our heart. When I got my paper back, there was more red ink than my original blue ink. I quit his class. Years later, I was selected for jury duty and so was he. I brought up my experience in his class. He explained that was his weeding out process. Classes were crowded and he wanted students who were ready to learn. I wish I had stuck it out. I gained a new respect for the man. Sorry for your loss.

Michelle and Laura,
I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing.
During our many years together at Crane School,4H and Yuma High School, your Dad was always a nice guy. I really hope my spelling and punctuation is correct as he was also my English Prof at AWC.
I pray for you both and your families.
