Simon Buckner Obituary

Simon B. Buckner 3rd, 94, of Yuma, died Aug 31, 2013 at Palm View Nursing Home, Yuma, AZ. He was born Nov 19, 1918 in Louisville KY to the late Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr. and wife, Adele Blanc. General Buckner commanded the 10th US Army on Okinawa where he was the highest ranking WWII American officer killed by enemy fire.

Simon 3rd also served in WWII but as a Signal Officer in N. Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. He credited his promotion to Captain to his fluency in French which facilitated his Signal Company's use of the French-controlled telephone system in N. Africa. He was also an import salesman.

He is survived by his sister Mary Brubaker of Ashland OR; brother, William C. Buckner of Kansas City, MO.; son, Jeffrey A. Buckner MD of New York City and his three children: Julia (Matthew) Malouin, Alexander and Matthew; nieces, nephews, and two great grandchildren.

The family thanks Palm View caretakers and Simon's helpful friends in Yuma, particularly Dan, Greg, Loren and Scott. Graveside services with military honors will be conducted 2:00PM, Tues., Sept. 10 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix AZ.
