Mary Shrader Obituary

Mary Lenore Woltz Shrader

East Providence, RI - Mary Lenore Woltz Shrader, 95, passed away on January 31, 2019 in East Providence, Rhode Island in the company of loving family. She was a trailblazer who transmitted her free spirit to the generations of women who followed her. It was a mark of her vitality that she had friends of all ages.

Mary was born on June 20, 1923 in Celina, Ohio and grew up in Wilksville. In 1944, she earned a BS in elementary education from Evansville (Indiana) College and married Donald Ray Shrader prior to his army service in Europe. The family lived in Malta, Rural Dale, and eventually Philo. They raised two sons, Steven and Michael, and a daughter, Suzanne. Mary taught hearing impaired children for the Zanesville school system, earning her MS in deaf education from Kent State in 1960. She lost Donald in 1977.

Mary had an unstoppable sense of adventure. After 28 years of teaching, she retired in 1984 and immediately set off to drive to Alaska. Mary was enthralled with all forms of flying. She rode in a glider, went parasailing, and took numerous hot air balloon rides. At age 72 she took a skydive. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than adventuring with her grandchildren. She was famous for her annual "Rites of Spring" costume parties. Community involvement defined her life. She tutored students and was an active participant in the American Association of University Women, the Muskingum County and Women's Democrat Clubs, the Lion's Club, Zanesville Education Association, and Friends of the Zanesville Library. In 2013, she published "The Memoirs of Mary Woltz Shrader" (available on Amazon), a series of vignettes from her life.

She is survived by her children: Suzanne and David Goldenberg of Cranston, RI, Steven Shrader of Saginaw MI, and Michael and Brenda Shrader of Columbus OH, five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering for friends and family will be scheduled in Zanesville sometime this summer. Scenes from Mary's life can be viewed on this video: https://vimeo.com/70110337.

Mary had a wonderful, kind of zaney, sense of humor. She was a very good teacher and a terrific person. Her ability to listen and understand was always available to her students and co-workers. I will never forget her.

We are so sorry for your loss and know she will be sadly missed by many who loved & remember her. I (Vicki) had hoped to see her one day ..but for the most years I didn't know where she lived or worked. I last saw her when I was just 15 in 1976 as my teacher at Hancock Jr. High. She was an AWESOME teacher and always made sure we understood anything she was teaching us cause of our deafness and no ASL .
She will be MISSED & ALWAYS REMEMBERED!
I MISS & LOVE YOU MRS. SHRADER!
