In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Ruthie was one of the first people I met when I moved to Alaska. I told her that I was going to be teaching in Selawik and she told me that they would take good care of me there, she was right. Ruthie was a tireless advocate for the children of Alaska. She will be missed but we all know that she is looking after us from Heaven.

We'll continue to be praying for the family. I will always remember Ruthie, I respected her and looked up to her. She was a good example as an Inupiaq Christian Leader and a part of her will be with everyone who knew her, she touched everyone by her work and life.

What a tremendous loss for all who knew her and to know her was to love her. Ruthie was one of the most generous people we have known. When we remember her - we remember her laugh, her wonderful story telling, her trememdous encouragement and generous support for whatever project you felt you wanted to do. She will always stand out in our minds as an example of how you can do it all... be a great and considerate leader, a loving and compassionate member of the community and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. What a loss. Please accept our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time.

Ruthie:

I will forever remember your warmth, and how you welcomed me to the family. You always had a ready laugh, and were accepting of everyone you met.

I love you, sis, and I will meet you again in heaven one day I pray. So this is not goodbye, but see you soon.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Goddess of the Moon

What a legacy this great female warrior leaves. She was a warrior of peace and love. I am an AI in Fl who learned about Mrs. Sampson when I came to Alaska last year. I have always wanted other tribes of AI in America to keep their language and customs alive. I feel this great woman was born and sent from the great spirits to do so for her people in Alaska. May she soar on the eagles wings forever looking over her loving husband, children and parents. When the eagle screams it will be her letting her happiness being with the great spirits known. I bow to you Mrs. Sampson. From - Goddess of the Moon, a descendant of Michikinikwa - Chief Little Turtle - Miami Indians - Ohio.

My deepest condolences to Ruthie's family and friends. Ruthie was a delightful friend. I have known her through our work in bilingual education since 1989. Ruthie had a warm heart, a quick wit and a good mind. My brief trip with her to Utauraq Camp in 2003 was the most enjoyable time I have spent picking cranberries, fishing, and enjoying the sun and the tundra. I will truly miss her. But I know she rests content with her ancestors and the beloved land upon which she lived her life.

Luke, my thoughts, prayers and condolences are with you and your family. For just a short time, your Ruthie's light did shine and brighten this world. Just to be around her was a gift. My first time meeting Ruthie was in Washington D.C. at an educational conference, we met in the hotel lobby as I was going out for a walk just to see what I could see, she said, "Let me "mileq"you"." We explored a little part of D.C. It was so peaceful to be in her presence. God bless and keep you all during this time. Gloria Simeon
