Madaline Barnes Obituary

Madaline M. Barnes Battle Creek Madaline M. Barnes, age 90, died peacefully on Wednesday evening, April 8, 2009 at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. She was born February 10, 1919 in Lee County, Illinois the daughter of Irvin W. and Marguerite (O'Donnell) Herrmann. In 1940, Madaline graduated from Northern Illinois Teachers College in DeKalb, Illinois with a BS in Home Economics. She was a teacher in the Battle Creek Public School District for 25 years, retiring in 1980. Madaline was active for many years at the "School Farm," which is now known as the Battle Creek Outdoor Education Center. Madaline married Captain Cecil N. Barnes on February 13, 1943 in Cheraw, South Carolina; he preceded her in death on December 7, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her son, Richard "Dick" Barnes on March 27, 2009; a grandson, Timothy; and two brothers. Madaline is survived by a son, Michael D. (Linda) Barnes of Oregon; two daughters, Marcia J. (Roger) Carpenter of Indiana and Susan K. Barnes of Kalamazoo; 9 grandchildren, Kent (Lisa) Barnes, Ryan Barnes, Tara Brown, David Schaut, Jonathon (Kristine) Barnes, Justin (Jessie) Barnes, Ann (John) Hodge, Scott (Lisa) Carpenter, Nicholas (Amanda) Smith; 12 great-grandchildren; and 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Battle Creek Home Economics Association and was a former secretary for the Battle Creek Area Retired Teachers Association. Madaline enjoyed sewing, crafts, traveling, playing Bridge and Dominoes and spending time with her loving family. At the request of the family, they will receive friends 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Charles H. Fischer, 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at St. Philip Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Fort Custer National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Madaline's honor to the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence or the Cereal City Lions Club. Hello I am her great grandaughter and it was a very hard time I am 14 years old and it was hard to loose over 3 people in a couple months when my great grandma died i was heart broken but i knew she was happier in heaven and there was nothing I could do to know that she would pass soon broke my heart I love you Great Grandma and I miss you.

My deepest sympathy to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I always enjoyed Madaline and Cecil and I am so glad that I introduced them to Colony Cove. They had many wonderful winters there.

Specials love and hugs to Jonathan and Justin. You have great faith and I know you will cherish your memories of her as well as those of your mother, father and grandfather. I wish I could be there with you at this sad time. See you in a couple weeks.
