Bruce and I grew up on North 23rd Street in Battle Creek/Lakeview, MI. We were good friends and spent countless days together. During our younger years, we would play various games together- ping pong in Bruce's basement during the winter, shooting hoops at his house in the summer, and setting up Army men to do battle on each side of his concrete front porch. We had great times together.
We mowed lawns in the summer and shoveled snow during the winter to earn money. Bruce got a break and started working as a cook at Battle Creek's Howard Johnson's Restaurant during the 1960's. Eventually, I starting working as a dishwasher. Bruce worked hard & saved his money. Eventually, Bruce saved enough $ dough to buy a brand new 1967 Pontiac GTO. It was beautiful. He paid cash! I can't remember what the color was. But, it didn't really matter-It was a GOAT!
Bruce was a US Army Vietnam veteran. Bruce was a little older than me and served in Nam shortly before I did... We talked about his driving an APC transporting troops. There were scary times for both of us in Vietnam. But, we got through those dangerous moments and made it home safely. I'm not if sure we really healed physiologically from Vietnam. I'm 72 years old now. I feel like it's important to share these memories about Jeff and me. I recall that we decided to repair Bruce's folk's television. How many kids remove all of the vacuum tubes from their parent's TV, test them at the local drugstore, just to try and fix the family tv set? We did that numerous times and repaired the tv each time. Paying a tv repair man was more than most of us could afford back then :-) We did our best to help out. We did good! RIP Brucie-you were a good friend of mine. I'll always remember you. Denny Trayer
