Anna Mowrey Obituary

Anna Kate Eleanor Mowrey Fort Wayne, IN Anna Kate Eleanor Mowrey, age 93, formerly of Delton and Battle Creek, died Thursday morning, January 28, 2010 at Coventry Meadows, Ft. Wayne. Anna was born on October 10, 1916 in Chassel, MI and was the daughter of Henry and Ida (Kemppainen) Bakkila. She had lived in the Detroit area where she worked in homes doing domestic help. Anna worked for Kellogg's during World War II by putting together K-rations. Her job was to put gum in every K-Ration and she would often sneak a second piece in as a surprise. Anna also worked at Montgomery Wards during the Christmas Holidays and she worked as an aide at the Ann J. Kellogg School, working with special needs children. Anna was a member of Redemption Lutheran Church of Battle Creek and a member of its Sunshine Group. She loved to sew and do crafts. Also, Anna enjoyed feeding and watching birds of all types. She would adopt some of the local mallards and name them Gravel Gertie. Anna loved the loons and the swans that swam on Fair Lake of Delton, MI. On December 29, 1945 in Battle Creek, Anna was united in marriage to Harvey L. Mowrey, who preceded her in death on November 15, 1998. Surviving is her son, Ronald Mowrey of Battle Creek; her granddaughter, Michelle L. (Sean) Beary of Ft. Wayne, IN; two grandsons, Eric & Tim Mowrey of Galesburg, MI; four great grandsons; her sisters, Elsa Aro of Bloomfield Hills, MI and Lil Koskela of Hancock, MI and her brother, Eric (Sige) Bakkila of Chassel, MI. Anna preceded in death by her parents; a son, Eric Duane Mowrey in1975; two sisters, Hilda Marten and Linda Savela and her two brothers, John and Hugo Bakkila. At the request of her family, friends may call on Wednesday, February 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek. The funeral service to celebrate Anna's life will be held on Thursday, February 4th at 11:00 a.m. at the Redemption Lutheran Church, 2450 W. Michigan Avenue, with the Rev. Karl N. Strenge, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Memorial contributions in Anna's honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2300 Portage Avenue, Suite 341, Kalamazoo, MI 49001.
