I got hooked on fly tying at an introductory class Charlie taught at Rod Builders Workshop called “Plymouth Bay Favorites”. He had all kinds of great names for his flies, the Percy Special, the Black Widow and my favorite, the Mummichug Mumbler. He was extremely patient, as my bucktail wrapped around the hook shank telling me, “don’t worry about the beard on your fly head; the stripers won't mind".
At the winter fly fishing shows, I would always seek out Charlie's friendly face as he manned his modest tying table. Typically, on display was a single bunker pattern he had designed: hook-up style, with a belly made from EZ-body over a little rattle and weighted keel. He had this grin on his face as he bragged unpretentiously that " Last Fall, with this fly, I was catching fish when no one could get them to take a thing".
I remember him calling me the night before our first charter, excited and out of breath, "the stripers are pushing the herring up onto the flats!". As it turned out the fishing was slow that day so Charlie stayed on the water for 12 hours not the 8 we had paid for. We didn't land a lot of fish, but as nubies, we learned a ton about where to go and what to look for. When the flies were not working he took out his ”Magic Jig”, yellow over white bucktail tied on a FinS jig head, which is now a staple in my tackle box.
For the next several years on each trip on the bay we would scan the horizon looking for Charlie’s green center console, figuring he had found fish when we had not. I didn’t seem in this summer and wondered where he was. We find our own fish now, but we will always remember Charlie two hours before low because when the rip at the head of the Kingston channel starts to boil, we laugh and joke, "The Nummet is heating up!".

The South Shore and entire fishing community has suffered a terrible loss with Charlies passing.
I first met Charlie at Rodbuilders Workshop in Kingston, Ma. He was the perfect gentleman and one of the best anglers this land lubber has ever come across.
He was a class act and a huge influence to me.
Whether it was tying knots, giving you a fresh lead on the hot spots, all the way up to helping me select the right air rifle for my young sons at Dick's Sporting Goods, you could always count on a pleasant exchange and a few quiet laughs.
He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
God bless you big guy and may peace come to your family and friends.

Charlie was a very special person who had a smile for all those he met. The fishing community will miss Captain Charlie, but I am sure that Charlie will be exploring new waters in a very special place.
