Sameer Mathur Obituary

MATHUR Sameer Mathur, beloved son of Aparajita and Alok Mathur of Westport, lost his battle against an infection of the brain Wednesday, April 30, 2008 and took his leave of us to go to a much better place. Sameer was a brilliant young man who has been torn from us at the early age of 19. Sameer loved music, played the guitar exceptionally well, composed poetry, and excelled in foreign languages having lived more than 10 years in in Switzerland and India and traveled to more than 20 other countries. Sameer was a superb student of mathematics and science. He was a semi-finalist in the prestigious Siemens-Westing-house Mathematics, Science, and Technology Competition. Sam's project dealt with molecules that regulate genes and Sameer did part of this research at Yale University. Sameer excelled at expository writing and was an avid snowboarder. Sameer was a boy scout for seven years and attained the rank of Life Scout at Troop 100 in Westport. Sameer had a very large circle of friends throughout the globe, the dearest among them was Kira Kim-Fredell, with whom he enjoyed a special relationship. His best friend was Trevor Morris, also of Staples High School, who was a constant companion. Sameer is survived by his 21-year old brother, Mohit of Westport, a Junior at University of Connecticut from whom he was inseparable. Sameer was treasured by his grandmothers, Mrs. Krishna Mathur and Mrs. Padam Bhatnagar, both of whom wrote poetry about Sameer. He was dear in the hearts of his uncles, Umesh, Ashok and Anil Mathur, Dr. Vibhay Bhatnagar, Vinay Bhatnagar, and the late Major Vijay Bhatnagar. His aunts, Alka Kapur, Lata Kumar, and Kavita Lal, will miss him terribly and mourn his passing. He leaves behind a host of cousins on both his mother's and father's side, all of whom were devoted to him. Of these, Drs. Shantanu and Kunal Lal and Gaurav Bhatnagar were at his bedside throughout. Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the The Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road in Fairfield Center. Services will follow in Mt. Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport (until our permanent Post Road driveway and signage is completed, please access our new facility through either the Brick Walk or Patriot Plaza Driveways). Friends may greet the family Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

I had the privilege of having both Sameer (two years) and Mo (one year) work for me at my summer camp. I was always so impressed with Sam's interest in everything about life. He would converse about music, politics, education and just about anything else you wanted to talk about. His depth of caring about the world went well beyond most people his age and all of us who knew him through summer camp will miss his ramblings about life. He was such a caring and talented young man. We will think of him this, and every summer as a new group of children descend upon us and put their trust in good people like Sameer to guide the way. With deepest sympathy .. Glenn O'Neill and family.

To Aparajita, Alok and Mohit

One morning in the early spring God looked upon His world

He looked and saw Sameer so ill and said come home to me

So Sameer went on a journey to see the Lord above

And left upon the earth
all of those he loved

But be not sad for dear Sameer for he is happy up above

And when you hear a faint musical sound

Please know Sameer is near

It is with great distress that I heard of Sam's passing. He was a wonderful, talented young man who had a tremendous future ahead of him, as seen (for only one of many examples) by his work in the Staples' Science Research Program. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to teach both Sam and his brother Mo. Please know that there are many at Staples like myself who knew Sam well and who share your grief.

Dear Mo and your family; my dearest sympathy is sent at the loss of your loved one. There are sweet and special memories of what a life brings to us; the richness of its presence, the feelings of loving someone so much that their leaving us alters our soul. I remembered this from an E. Millay poem and thought it expressed the loss of such a fine young man very well: "I only know that summer sang in me/ A little while, that in me sings no more." All my thoughts are with you.

We are so saddened to hear of your loss.
The memories we have of Sam skateboarding in your driveway, helping you
