MIDDLEBORO — Lillian F. (McMurtrie) Atkinson, age 90, died peacefully July 8, 2008, at The Hannah B. Shaw Home in Middleboro.

Born in Boston, she lived most of her adult life in Swampscott and Harwich. In recent years, she resided at Newfield House in Plymouth, and more recently, the Hannah B. Shaw Home in Middleboro.

Born on Nov. 26, 1917, Lillian was the daughter of the late David and Lillian (Beadle) McMurtrie. She was raised in the Boston area and graduated from Watertown High School. A graduate of Boston University School of Business, she was a practicing CPA until the late 1990s.

Lillian received a master's in education from Salem State College and was a math teacher at Shaw Jr. High School in Swampscott from 1965 to 1974.

Throughout her life, Lillian was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, going to the theater, but most of all, she valued spending time with family and friends.

Lillian was the beloved wife of the late William R. Atkinson; loving mother of Janet van Steensel and her husband, John, of Hanson, Joan Atkinson and her husband, Richard Abbott, of Amesbury, and Fay Semple of Plymouth; and sister of Evelyn Murray of Bedford. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Paul van Steensel and his wife, Chantell, of Orleans, Kevin van Steensel of Sandy Hook, N.J., Gary MacKenzie and his wife, Susan, of West Barnstable, Glenn MacKenzie and his wife, Mary Ann, of Centerville, Gayle Cotter and her husband, Edward, of Mashpee, and Gerilyn Fogarty and her husband, Terence, of Plymouth; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be private.

Donations may be made in Lillian's name to Hannah B. Shaw Home, 299 Wareham St., Middleboro, MA 02346, or Old Colony Hospice, 1 Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368.
