Luella Whittum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2008.
BREWSTER — Luella Margaret Whittum, 86, "went to meet Jesus" on Sept. 13, 2008, at Epoch Senior Healthcare in Brewster.

She was the daughter of the late Bessie Garland Kemp and Chester P. Kemp; devoted wife of the late Ralph C. Whittum Sr. for 62 years; mother of Betsy Holden of Brewster, Janice Todd of Galax, Va., and Ralph C. Whittum II of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Born in Boston, she grew up in North Quincy and then lived in and raised her family in Braintree.

Luella was an extremely talented woman. She was secretary to the assistant superintendent of schools in Braintree, and later secretary at the Thayer Academy in Braintree. She was a sewer, knitter, crocheter, gardener, homemaker and more.

Her biggest joy was to sing in the church choir and the Cape Cod chorale. She loved her church and enjoyed reading her favorite Bible versus, with the love for God that shined in the exemplary way she lived her life everyday.

Luella had six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Cape Cod Covenant Church, on the corner of Satucket Road in Brewster, on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 11 a.m.

Memorial donations can be made in Luella's memory to the Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & Islands, 712 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601, Attn: Jodi Flynn.

Janice, Ralph and Betsy,
I was sad to hear about your mother's passing. Seeing her picture in the Cape Cod Times made me smile and brought wonderful memories flooding back of all the times I spent at your home when we were growing up. I thought your family was just perfect. I also remember a wonderful vacation in Eastham one summer. Your mother always thought of great things for us to do; she was involved in all our activities from church to Girl Scouts and beyond. You were so fortunate to have her for such a long time.
I will be thinking of your family at this difficult time.
