Eva Montiero Obituary
Eva (Soares) Montiero, 79, died at home on Nov. 8, 2007.
Mrs. Montiero was a lifelong resident of Falmouth and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1947. She worked at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole before working for the National Marine Fisheries Service in Woods Hole for 22 years. In 1994 she retired.
She enjoyed anything that had to do with the sea, being a Red Sox fan, and dancing at the Big Club. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, Michael R. Montiero of East Falmouth; a daughter, Janice M. Montiero of New Bedford; brother, Frank Soares of Virginia; six grandchildren, India Hendricks of New Bedford, Lawrence M. Hendricks of Wareham, Marcus Montiero of East Falmouth, Martin Montiero of East Falmouth, Jayce Pastrana of New Bedford, and Christiana Pastrana of Wareham; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 12, in Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Falmouth Center. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at St. Anthony's Church, 167 E. Falmouth Highway (Route 28), East Falmouth, followed by burial at St. Anthony's Cemetery.

I will always remember Eva's quick wit ,wonderful smile and work ethic. We will miss her in the physical world but Eva's touch rides in our hearts and Her voice in our ears.

A Tribute to Eva Montiero
Eva my Friend . . . How I’ll miss you!
You and I first became close back in 1975 when as cabin-mates onboard the Albatross IV – also known as the “All-But-Lost”. We shared a love for the beauty and adventure of life at sea. You taught me how to fillet a redfish or a porgy and put it in the freezer just to make sure there was something good for the dinner table throughout the year. Remember the time we played that joke on Ed Bowman, our Watch Chief? It was you who snuck into his cabin and hid that goosefish under his pillow! Boy was he surprised! Oh, how we laughed! And, we laughed each time we remembered it together over the 30-odd years that followed.
Eva my Surrogate Mother . . . How I’ll miss you!
I was together with you at sea just after my Mother died back in 1981. I was just 27, and felt so lost and vulnerable. But you comforted me and gave me strength and courage. You agreed to be my Surrogate Mother. And, you were always there for me, not just as a Mother, but as a friend. I tried my best to spark your interest in my widowed Father, but alas it was never meant to be. After I left the Cape with the Viking and your blessing, we had to rely on phone conversations. But each time when I returned for a visit, I always beat a path straight your door on Soares Lane to sit and talk and bask in your glow.
Eva my Guardian Angel . . . How I’ll miss you!
When I was out for a walk and got hit by that car back in 1984, it was you that recognized the “unidentified” young woman that they described on the radio. It was you who called in the number they gave to tell them who I was as I lay unconscious and unable to speak for myself. It was you who came to visit me everyday at Lewis Bay Head Injury Center until I woke from the coma and came around. And, it was you who always remembered to send me a birthday card around this time of year. Indeed, today is November 11th. How fitting that today I write this tribute to you!
Eva my Inspiration . . . How I’ll miss you!
Always so beautiful! You were a joy to behold when, at age 60, you still strut your stuff proudly up and down Woods Hole Road in your brightly colored mini skirts, catching eyes and treating the world to your dazzling smile and friendly greetings. How I admired your courage and respected your fierce independence! “I may be a woman left alone to raise two small children on my own, but don’t mess with me!” Through your example, I too learned how to fight for myself, to hold my head high and how to not ever take “No Stuff from No Body!”
Eva my Friend, Mother, Angel and Inspiration . . . How I’ll miss you!
You’ve been such an important part of my life for so long. Don’t leave me now! I truly regret that I cannot be there with you, your family, and our mutual friends as they lay you to rest. But I’ll look forward to seeing you again -- to laugh and share our hopes, joys and secrets – at some other time . . . in some other not-so-distant place.

Eva and I participated in many NEFSC research survey cruises and apart from her intense work ethic was her amazing ability to always show up for her shift looking like she just left the beauty parlor while the rest of us wore fish scales and gurry from the previous watches!
